After windows did an automatic update after an install and shutdown situation, the next time my PC was booted it at first went into a temporary user mode, then after a reboot it would no longer boot at all. The automatic repair did not work either. After a semi successful SFC /scannow perform with errors, and performing a DISM attempt to fix the host files that was not successful, it was able to boot again but only to the temporary account. The windows interface was full of irregular things happening like clicking in the search bar or even on the windows start icon did nothing but flash and never open. only way to navigate or open anything was thru the task manager start new task with admin. notepad would not even open. I had to do a clean install of windows 11 using my previous product key which it would not activate with, so I've spent all weekend just getting my PC back up and running to a bare bones installation and now can't get it to Activate.............SMH, I thought this was taking me to customer support not to the community, because the community can not activate my PC. What to do now..... Drop more money for product keys just to have it happen again.

    Hi EricN,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that after updating Windows 11 and performing a clean installation, Windows is no longer activating and you are concerned about having to purchase another license.

    To better narrow this down:

    1. Are you currently signed in to Windows with a Microsoft account or using a local account?
    2. What exact activation error code or message do you see on the Activation page?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

1, Check the installed Windows edition

    • Open Settings, go to System, then Activation
    • Confirm the edition shown matches your license type (for example, Windows 11 Home vs Pro)

    2, Run the Activation troubleshooter

    • On the Activation page, select Troubleshoot
    • If prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account that may have been used previously

    3, Verify digital license association

    • Open Settings, go to Accounts, then Your info
    • Confirm it shows that you are signed in with a Microsoft account
    • If not, sign in and restart the device

4, Use Change product key instead of re‑entering during setup

    • Open Settings, go to System, then Activation
    • Select Change product key and re‑enter the key there

5, Check activation status with command line

    • Open Command Prompt as administrator
    • Run slmgr /xpr
    • Note the activation result shown

    Hello,

How did you obtain your license initially?

Did it come with the device preinstalled, or did you purchase it?

If you purchased it, did you purchase from Microsoft, or from third party?

Is it originally a Win7/8 key?
