Question

for accessing power BI, Do I need to pay for Microsoft 365 or any subscription? Because I'm trying to log in with my personal account but it's not letting me to go in.my email address is : [Moderator note: Personal information removed]@outlook.com

Power BI requires a work or school email address to sign in. Personal email accounts like @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @gmail.com aren’t supported for the Power BI service. Microsoft specifically notes that you can’t use consumer email accounts to sign up. Since you're using a personal Outlook account, that’s exactly why you're being blocked. 

The good news is you don’t have to pay for Microsoft 365 just to get access yet. Microsoft provides a simple workaround for people who don’t have a work or school email. 

Microsoft allows users without a work email to create a temporary work account by starting a Microsoft 365 trial. When you start the trial, Microsoft automatically gives you a new organizational email (something like [yourname]@[yourdomain].onmicrosoft.com) that works with Power BI.  

This new “work” email lets you: 

• Sign in to the Power BI Service 
• Use Power BI with the free Fabric (Free) license 
• Start a trial of Power BI Pro if you need additional features 

You don’t need to purchase Microsoft 365 unless you want to keep the subscription after the trial ends.

To start a Microsoft 365 free trial that includes Power BI, you can follow these steps: 

• Go to the Microsoft 365 Enterprise Plans page: Visit the Compare Office 365 Enterprise Pricing and Plans | Microsoft 365 section on the Microsoft website to begin the process. 
• Select “Try for free” under Office 365 E5: The Office 365 E5 plan includes Power BI capabilities, and choosing the free trial option will start the setup process. 
• Complete the guided setup: You’ll be asked to create a new Microsoft account and set up a new tenant. This creates a separate Microsoft 365 environment specifically for the trial. 

Note about payment information:  

• A credit card is required for activation.

Power BI requires a work or school account and a Power BI license. A personal Outlook.com account can’t be used directly to sign up for the Power BI service.

Key points:

1. Account type
   • Power BI self-service sign-up does not accept consumer email domains like Outlook.com, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.
   • A work or school email account is required to sign up for the Power BI service.
2. Do any subscriptions need to be purchased?
   • Power BI can be used with different license types (for example, Fabric Free, Power BI Pro, Premium per user), but a valid work/school account is always required.
   • Some Microsoft 365 plans (such as certain Office 365/Microsoft 365 business/enterprise plans) already include a Power BI Pro license.
   • If the organization has enabled self-service, a user can:
     • Sign up for a free license if available, or
     • Start an individual trial of a paid license from within the Power BI service.
3. What to do in this situation
   • Since the current email is a personal Outlook.com address, it cannot be used to sign up directly for Power BI.
   • To try Power BI without an existing work/school account, one option is to sign up for a Microsoft 365 trial that creates a work account (an onmicrosoft.com address) and a new tenant. That trial then allows signing in to Power BI with the new work account.
   • If already part of an organization that uses Microsoft 365, request a work email account from the organization and use that to sign in to Power BI.
4. Checking licenses (once a work/school account is available)
   • After signing in at app.powerbi.com with a work/school account, select the profile picture → View account → Subscriptions to see which licenses (for example, Fabric Free, Power BI Pro) are assigned.
