my publisher states that it is unlicensed but I'm part of a Microsoft family 365 account which is updated. How do I fix this?

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand how confusing and frustrating it is to see Publisher marked as unlicensed even though you are already part of an active Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

This issue usually happens when Office is signed in with an account that is not the one assigned the subscription, or when the activation token on the device becomes outdated after an update or system change.

The best next step is to open any Office app, go to the account section, sign out of all accounts, and then sign back in using the Microsoft account that owns the Family subscription so the license can refresh. It can also help to run the Office repair tool or check for updates to ensure Publisher reconnects to the correct license.

May I ask if Publisher shows the correct Microsoft account in the top right corner or if it lists a different account that may be causing the conflict? Please feel free to follow up so I can help guide you to a full resolution.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

Microsoft 365 Family includes the right to install the Office desktop apps (including Publisher), but the “Unlicensed product” message appears when activation fails or the app is signed into the wrong account.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Confirm the correct subscription and account
      1. Close all Office apps (including Publisher).
      2. Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account that is the owner of the Microsoft 365 Family subscription.
      4. Under Subscriptions, verify that Microsoft 365 Family is listed as active and not expired or cancelled.
      5. If the subscription is not active, renew it and then reopen Publisher.
    2. Make sure Publisher is signed into the right account
      1. Open another Office app such as Word.
      2. Go to File > Account.
      3. Under User Information, check which email address is signed in.
      4. If it is not the Microsoft account that owns the Family subscription, click Sign out.
      5. Click Sign in and sign in with the Microsoft 365 Family owner account (or the Family member account that was explicitly shared the subscription).
      6. In the same Account page, look under Product Information and click Update license (or similar) if available, then follow the prompts.
    3. Check for multiple Office installations Activation can fail if there are multiple Office versions installed.
      1. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
      2. Search for Office in the list.
      3. If more than one Office version is listed, right‑click the one that is not part of Microsoft 365 and select Uninstall.
      4. Restart the computer.
      5. Open Publisher and sign in again if prompted.
    4. Run Office as administrator once
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. On Windows, select Start, type Publisher (or Word), then right‑click it and choose Run as administrator.
      3. Approve the prompt, then sign in again if asked and check if the unlicensed message disappears.
    5. If still unlicensed, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter
      1. Close all Office apps.
      2. On Windows 10 or later, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from this article: Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office.
      3. Follow the prompts to detect and fix activation issues on the same PC where Publisher is installed.

If Publisher still shows as unlicensed after these steps and the subscription is confirmed active, contact Microsoft support from the same article so they can check the subscription and activation state on the account.
