    Hi Veronica M. Solis,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand that you are unable to turn on your camera on Windows 11 and need it urgently to record and upload a video for your class.

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following.

Before that, I’d like to narrow this down a bit to better understand the situation:

1, Are you using the built‑in camera on a laptop or an external USB webcam?

2, Which app or website are you using to record the video for your class?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

1, Restart the Windows camera service

    • Press Windows key + R
    • Type services.msc and press Enter
    • Locate Windows Camera Frame Server
    • Right‑click it and select Restart

    2, Reset the Camera app

    • Open Settings
    • Select Apps
    • Select Installed apps
    • Locate Camera
    • Select Advanced options
    • Select Repair, then test the camera
    • If it still does not work, select Reset and test again

3, Check camera access at the device level

    • Open Settings
    • Select Privacy and security
    • Select Camera
    • Make sure Camera access is turned on at the top of the page

4, Temporarily disable third‑party security software

    • If any third‑party antivirus or privacy software is installed, temporarily disable it
    • Test the camera again
    • Re‑enable the software after testing

5, Force camera re‑initialization in Device Manager

    • Right‑click Start and select Device Manager
    • Expand Cameras
    • Right‑click the camera and select Disable device
    • Wait a few seconds, then right‑click it again and select Enable device

    6, Check firmware‑level camera settings

    • Restart the device and enter BIOS or UEFI settings
    • Look for any option related to Camera, Imaging Device, or I O Devices
    • Make sure the camera is enabled
    • Save changes and restart Windows

If you open the Camera app, what does it say? Any error message? Or is it just a black screen? Any additional information would be helpful if you don't mind.

Most camera issues can be due to a physical privacy cover covering the lens. Make sure that's not the case.

Otherwise there is usually a physical button/key/switch you can use to turn the camera on or off. For example, most Lenovo uses F8 or Fn+F8, or a switch above the lens, HP has a camera key or a button on the side of the laptop, MSI uses F6 or Fn+F6, etc.

If you are not sure, tell me what the camera app says/shows, and then please hold down Windows + R keys, type in msinfo32.exe and hit enter. Then share a screenshot of the System Information window. Thanks!

Try these steps in order on Windows 11 to get the camera working so the video can be recorded and uploaded.

    1. Run the camera troubleshooter
      • Open the Get Help app and run the Camera troubleshooter using this link: Run the troubleshooter in Get Help.
      • Let it finish and apply any fixes it suggests, then test the camera again.
    2. Check physical camera controls
      • If using an external webcam, make sure it is firmly plugged into the USB port and test a different USB port if possible.
      • If using a laptop camera:
        • Look for a function key (F1–F12) with a camera icon and press it (sometimes Fn + that key) to turn the camera on.
        • Check for a small slider or shutter next to the camera lens and slide it open.
        • Some laptops have a side switch or a dedicated camera key; ensure it is set to on.
    3. Check Windows camera privacy settings
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera or use this link: Allow access to the camera on this device.
      • Make sure Camera access is turned On.
      • Make sure Let apps access your camera is turned On.
      • Under Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your camera, turn on access for the app being used to record.
      • If using a desktop app (browser, Teams, Zoom, etc.), make sure Allow desktop apps to access your camera is turned On.
    4. Test the camera in the Camera app
      • Select Start > Camera.
      • If the preview works here, the camera is fine and the problem is with the specific app being used for class. Check that app’s own camera settings and select the correct camera.
    5. Update or reinstall the camera driver
      • Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
      • Expand Cameras.
      • Right-click the camera and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
      • After it finishes, restart the PC and test again.
      • If the camera stopped working after a recent update, in Device Manager:
        • Right-click the camera > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver (if available), then restart and test.
        • If that does not help, in Properties > Driver select Uninstall Device, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (if available), select OK, then in Device Manager choose Action > Scan for hardware changes and restart.
    6. If the screen is black or video won’t start
      • Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and the room is lit.
      • If seeing a black screen or “video start failed” errors, updating the driver from Device Manager as above is the recommended fix.

If the camera still does not turn on after all of these steps, test the webcam on another device (if external). If it also fails there, the camera hardware may be faulty and the device or camera manufacturer’s support page should be used for repair or replacement options.
