Try these steps in order on Windows 11:
- Check physical camera cover or key
- Look closely at the camera at the top of the screen for a small slider/shutter; slide it open.
- Check the function keys (F1–F12) for a camera icon (often F4, F6, or similar). Press that key, or Fn + that key, to turn the camera on.
- Some laptops also have a side switch for the camera—make sure it is not set to Off.
- Test in the Camera app
- Select Start > Camera and see if the preview works.
- If the Camera app shows video, but Zoom does not, the issue is with Zoom’s settings (choose the correct camera in Zoom’s video settings).
- Check privacy settings for camera
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera (or use this link: Allow access to the camera on this device).
- Turn on Camera access for this device (select Change if needed).
- Turn on Allow apps to access your camera.
- Under Allow desktop apps to access your camera, make sure this is On so apps like Zoom and Teams can use the camera.
- Check for Windows and driver updates
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- If available, open Advanced options > Optional updates and install any camera/webcam driver updates.
- Restart the PC and test again in the Camera app.
- Update or reinstall the camera driver (if still not working)
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras and right-click the built-in camera.
- Choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers, then restart and test.
- If it still fails, in Properties > Driver, try Roll Back Driver if available, or Uninstall device and then Scan for hardware changes to reinstall.
If the camera still does not show any image even in the Camera app after these steps, test it with another app and then check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for a specific webcam driver or possible hardware issue.
