A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
The account is locked and self-service options are limited, especially without access to the Azure portal to open a support ticket. Use the official Microsoft account and tenant recovery flows and, if needed, contact Microsoft support directly so the appropriate team (including the Data Protection team for tenant/admin issues) can verify identity and review the lock.
- If this is a personal Microsoft account (used to sign in to Azure)
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com and attempt to sign in.
- If prompted that the Microsoft account is locked, follow the guidance in Microsoft account has been locked:
- Request a security code using any phone number that can receive SMS; it does not need to be associated with the account.
- Enter the code and, if required, set a new password.
- If the sign-in page shows no Next option and indicates the account is locked, select the aka.ms/ link shown in that window and complete the reinstatement form. A Microsoft Online Safety support agent will review the request and contact by email. Do not submit multiple forms, as that can slow down processing.
- If this is an Outlook.com/Microsoft account used with Azure
- Use the Sign-in Helper flow described in Unblock my Outlook.com account:
- Start from the Sign-in Helper link and follow the prompts to unblock the account with a security code or password change.
- If unblocking fails, use the guidance under When you can't sign in to your Microsoft account from that article to reset the password and, if needed, reach support.
- If this is an Azure AD/Microsoft Entra tenant lock or admin lockout
- For tenant or admin lockouts (for example, cannot access the only global admin account, or tenant blocked/inactive), the Microsoft Data Protection team must assist:
- If there is any other account that can sign in to Microsoft 365/Azure (even in a different tenant), use it to contact Microsoft Support and open a ticket describing that the Azure/Microsoft account tied to the GitHub Student Developer Pack is locked and cannot access the portal.
- If there is only one admin and no other access path, call the appropriate Microsoft support hotline for the region and request a service ticket for an admin/tenant lockout so the Data Protection team can verify identity and restore access.
- If verification codes are not received or recovery fails
- Follow the troubleshooting guidance for verification codes in the linked articles.
- If password reset or recovery forms fail repeatedly, complete the Microsoft account recovery form (ACSR) as thoroughly as possible from a familiar device and network, then wait for the response before resubmitting.
These are the only supported ways to unlock or recover a locked Microsoft/Azure account; forum users and community responders cannot directly unlock accounts or bypass security.
