Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Use two parallel steps: identify the account, then request cancellation/refund.
- Identify which account is using the subscription
- If this is a Microsoft 365 for home subscription (Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium), it is tied to the same email address that was used when Microsoft 365 was first bought or activated, and that is used to sign in at the Microsoft account portal.
- If this is a Microsoft 365 for business subscription (for work or school), the license is associated with the work or school email account assigned by the organization.
- Check old purchase/renewal emails from Microsoft for the address shown in the message.
- If Microsoft 365 apps are installed on a Mac or another device, open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, go to File > Account, and look under Product Information to see the email account the product is licensed to.
- If it is a work/school subscription and the username is unknown, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin to retrieve the username or reset the password.
- Cancel the subscription and request a refund (consumer/home subscriptions)
- Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 with the same Microsoft account that was used to purchase the subscription.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
- Select Cancel (or Upgrade or Cancel, depending on what is shown) and follow the on‑screen steps.
- After cancellation, refund eligibility depends on the subscription type, when it was charged, and local laws. For Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium purchased from Microsoft, cancellation is required first to check refund eligibility.
- If the subscription was purchased through Google Play or the Apple App Store, contact their support directly for cancellation or refund.
- Cancel the subscription and request a refund (business/work or school subscriptions)
- If the charge is for a work or school subscription, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin or billing owner; they control licenses and refunds for those subscriptions.
- If the charge or account still cannot be identified
- Because resolving unknown or duplicate charges may require access to billing data and personal information, contact Microsoft Customer Support directly via the official support site and choose a billing/subscription category. A support agent can look up the charge using payment details and help cancel the subscription and evaluate refund options.
For ongoing protection, once the correct subscription is found and cancelled, verify that recurring billing is turned off for any other Microsoft subscriptions under the same account to avoid future unexpected charges.
