Access to Home and Student 2019

I can't access my 2019 Home and Office on my laptop. When I try I am being told that it is Microsoft 365 business that I have, but I have never purchased or had Microsoft 365 business on my laptop, I have only ever used Home and Student. I have noticed that at times I am being asked for a product key, but I can't remember ever having one and if I did receive one I can't locate it

Follow these steps to regain access to Office Home & Student 2019 and stop the Microsoft 365 Business confusion:

1. Confirm which account owns Office 2019
   • On the same PC, go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
   • Sign in with each personal Microsoft account that might have been used when the laptop was first set up.
   • Look for “Office Home & Student 2019” under your subscriptions and purchases.
   • If it appears there, that is the account that should be used to activate Office on this laptop.
2. Reinstall Office Home & Student 2019 from the correct account
   • While signed in to the correct account at https://account.microsoft.com/services, locate “Office Home & Student 2019”.
   • Select Install to download the Office installer.
   • Run the installer and complete setup. This will install the perpetual (non‑subscription) Office 2019 tied to that account, not Microsoft 365 Business.
3. Remove conflicting Microsoft 365 apps (if present)
   • If the device came with a pre‑installed Microsoft 365 trial, it can cause confusion where the system shows “Microsoft 365 for business” or asks for a product key.
   • In Windows, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall any “Microsoft 365” or “Microsoft 365 Apps” entries.
   • After uninstalling, restart the device, then use the Office 2019 installer from step 2.
4. When asked for a product key
   • Home & Student 2019 is usually linked to a Microsoft account rather than needing a product key each time.
   • If prompted inside an Office app, choose the option to sign in instead of entering a key, and sign in with the account that shows Office Home & Student 2019 on the Services & subscriptions page.
5. If Office still shows as unlicensed or wrong product
   • Open Word or Excel → File → Account.
   • Under Product Information, check which account it says the product “Belongs to”. If it is not the account that owns Home & Student 2019, sign out there and sign back in with the correct Microsoft account.

If Office 2019 does not appear under any of the Microsoft accounts checked, the license may never have been associated with an account or may have been activated under a different email. In that case, direct support from Microsoft may be required to investigate ownership.
