Starting today, Outlook does not send and receive emails from my gmx.com account. It asks for the password for the imap,gmx.com server. It is not recognized even after changing the password on the internet.

    Hi The Lancasters

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand you're facing issue with GMX accounts in classic Outlook for Windows.

Could you confirm whether you’ve tried the steps mentioned in the Q&A Assist reply? If yes, did you face any difficulties with those steps?

Since this involves a third‑party email provider (GMX) connected to classic Outlook for Windows, please review the following points:

1, Check GMX security and access logs

    • Sign in to GMX webmail and review any security alerts, blocked sign‑ins, or connection warnings.
    • Some providers temporarily block mail clients if multiple failed sign‑in attempts are detected or if the connection is flagged as unusual.

2, Verify IMAP access is still enabled on the GMX account

    • Some email providers disable IMAP access automatically after password or security changes.
    • Confirm that external email access (IMAP) is explicitly enabled in your GMX account settings.

3, Remove cached credentials at the Windows level Even when Outlook is updated, Windows can retain outdated credentials.

    • Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials
    • Remove any entries related to Outlook, Office, or gmx.com
    • Restart the device and then reopen Outlook to test again

4, Test with a new Outlook profile

    • Close Outlook.
    • Open Control Panel > Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
    • Select Show Profiles > Add.
    • Create a new profile name (for example: Outlook Test).
    • Add the same GMX email account.
    • Choose Prompt for a profile to be used.
    • Open Outlook and select the new profile.
    • Test send and receive.
      • If it works, the original profile is likely corrupted.
      • If the issue remains, the problem is not profile‑related.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes so I can assist you further. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Outlook is still using the old credentials for the GMX IMAP server. After changing the password on the GMX website, the new password must also be updated in classic Outlook, and in some cases an app‑specific password may be required.

Try the following steps in classic Outlook for Windows:

    1. Confirm the account type and server
      • GMX should be configured as an IMAP account (server like imap.gmx.com).
      • If the account was added as another type (for example, Exchange), remove and re‑add it as IMAP.
    2. Update the stored password in Outlook
      • In classic Outlook, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
      • Select the GMX account and choose Change or Repair.
      • Enter the new GMX password when prompted and complete the wizard.
      • If Outlook keeps prompting, verify that the username is the full GMX email address (for example, ******@gmx.com) and that Caps Lock is off, because passwords are case‑sensitive.
      • If GMX requires an app password for email programs, generate that on the GMX site and use it in Outlook instead of the normal password.
    3. If Outlook still repeatedly asks for the password
      • This usually means either the password in Outlook does not match the one set with the provider, or the provider is rejecting the connection.
      • Sign in to GMX via the web to confirm the new password works there.
      • Then carefully re‑enter the same password in Outlook as above.

If the problem started right after changing the password on the GMX website, updating the password in Outlook as described in Change or update your email password in Outlook for Windows is required for Outlook to send and receive again.
