Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Follow these steps in order, without resetting the password:
- Confirm the account and subscription status
- Go to the Microsoft account Services page: use the link from the article “Problems renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription”.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Office.
- Under your Microsoft 365 subscription, confirm it shows as active (for example, “Has recurring billing” or “Expires on [date]” in September 2026).
- If the subscription is not active, resolve that first (renew or fix billing) and then try signing in to Office again.
- Check sign-in outside the Office apps
- In a browser, sign in at the correct Microsoft 365 location for the account type (see “Where to sign in to Microsoft 365” in the mobile apps article).
- If sign-in fails in the browser as well, use the Sign-in Helper tool referenced in the subscription article. It will detect common account problems and guide through fixes without forcing a password reset if not needed.
- Address two-step verification / MFA issues
- If two-step verification is failing repeatedly, avoid many rapid attempts; repeated failures can trigger security blocks.
- If a block is suspected (for example, repeated prompts to “Try another verification method”), follow the guidance in “Common problems with two-step verification for a work or school account”:
- Try another verification method already configured on the account (alternate email, SMS, etc.).
- Try another network (switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or a different Wi‑Fi).
- If still blocked, wait at least 24 hours without repeated attempts before trying again, as temporary blocks can clear automatically.
- If using Office on a mobile device
- Make sure the device meets the system requirements for Microsoft 365 apps.
- If on iPad and seeing messages like No subscription found or similar sign‑in issues, reset the app as described:
- Open Settings on the iPad.
- Select the Office app (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote).
- Under RESET, tap Reset <app name>.
- Turn on Delete Login Credentials.
- Close the app completely and reopen it, then sign in again with the same Microsoft account that shows the active subscription.
- If the desktop apps show “Something went wrong [1001]”
- This error is known to be related to authentication components on the device.
- First, reboot the device and try signing in again.
- If the issue persists and security software is installed, temporarily disable or uninstall that security software (if safe and acceptable) and test sign‑in again, as some products interfere with the Windows Account Manager (WAM) plug‑in.
- If still failing, follow the guidance in “Error ‘Something Went Wrong [1001]’ signing in to Microsoft 365 Desktop Applications” and the linked article “Can’t sign in to Microsoft 365 desktop applications” for more detailed remediation.
- If none of the above resolves the problem
- Run the Microsoft 365 sign-in troubleshooter (on Windows 10 or later) from the “Troubleshoot installing Office” article to automatically test and repair common sign‑in issues.
- If the troubleshooter and Sign‑in Helper do not resolve the issue, contact Microsoft Support using any working Microsoft account (it can be a different personal account) and reference that:
- Sign‑in to Office apps fails with “Something went wrong. Choose a different way to sign in.”
- Two-step verification is not working.
- The subscription is confirmed active until September 2026.
These steps focus on verifying the subscription, confirming the account works in a browser, clearing MFA/verification blocks, and applying the documented fixes for the “Something went wrong [1001]” sign‑in class of issues.
