Hello,

I have been trying since this past thursday to add a domain to godaddy's email exchange accounts and have been in a loop trying to verify the domain. I am being told it is already connected to a tenant. I have tried everything and am just in an Microsoft admin center login loop. How can I get help wit this issue. Godaddy tech has given up. I do now have the tenant id or at least i think i do.

Sincerely,

    Hi @Web Master

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. I understand that you are trying to add your domain into Microsoft 365, but the system indicates that the domain is already associated with another Microsoft 365 tenant.

In Microsoft 365, a domain cannot be verified in more than one tenant at the same time. If the domain was previously used in a trial subscription, registered through a self-service sign-up, or configured by another provider or tenant, Microsoft will prevent it from being added elsewhere until it is removed from the existing tenant.

Option 1: Domain linked to an unmanaged tenant

If the domain belongs to an unmanaged tenant that was automatically created through self-service registration, you may be able to perform an internal admin takeover. After gaining administrative control, you can remove the domain from that tenant.

Please note that this approach is only possible when the tenant does not already have a Global Administrator assigned.

Microsoft provides step-by-step guidance for this process in the following documentation: Remove a domain from another account - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Option 2: Domain linked to a managed tenant

If the domain is already part of a managed tenant and you do not have administrative access to that environment, the domain cannot be removed through self-service methods.

In this case, the domain must be released by Microsoft through a Domain Release request, which is handled by their Data Protection team.

The recommended next step is to open a support request from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center by navigating to Support > Help & Support.

Once the request is submitted, the Data Protection team will:

    • Confirm that you are the legitimate owner of the domain
    • Contact the administrators of the existing tenant
    • Remove the domain from that tenant so it can be added to your current environment

The domain is already attached to another Microsoft 365 tenant, so it must be released from that tenant before it can be used with GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 email.

Use these steps and escalation paths:

    1. Confirm the exact error
    • When adding/verifying the domain, the typical error is similar to:
      • “Can’t verify the domain <domain> was already added to a different Office 365 account… Sign in to that account as an admin, and remove domain <domain>.”
    • This means the domain exists in another Microsoft 365 organization and can only be in one tenant at a time.
    1. If the tenant is known and accessible
    • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center for that tenant as a Global admin.
    • Go to Setup > Domains.
    • Select the custom domain and remove it from that tenant.
    • After removal completes, return to GoDaddy/Microsoft 365 and add/verify the domain again.
    1. If the tenant is unknown or not accessible Because access to the tenant is not available, this must be handled by Microsoft support:
    • The documented guidance is:
      • “If you don't know what Office 365 account is currently using the custom domain or if you don't have control over the Office 365 account that's currently using the custom domain, contact Office 365 Support.”
    • For nonprofit scenarios or if the domain is tied to a GoDaddy-provisioned tenant:
      • Contact GoDaddy to confirm whether the domain is still bound to a GoDaddy-managed Microsoft 365 tenant and request they release the domain if so.
      • If GoDaddy confirms the domain is not in their tenant but Microsoft still reports it in use, contact Microsoft 365/Office 365 support directly and provide:
        • Domain name
        • Tenant ID (the one believed to be holding the domain)
        • Proof of domain ownership (DNS control, registrar info)
    1. If this is a nonprofit or GoDaddy-hosted Microsoft 365 scenario
    • If sign-in keeps redirecting to GoDaddy or admin access is blocked:
      • Ask GoDaddy support to release the custom domain from their Microsoft 365 tenant.
      • Be aware: releasing the domain might temporarily disrupt email services; confirm impact with GoDaddy first.
    • If during registration for Microsoft for Nonprofits the error is “domain already in use”:
      • Contact Microsoft nonprofit support to confirm domain status and either:
        • Recover access to the original tenant, or
        • Coordinate release of the domain.
    1. Use Microsoft 365 admin center health checks (if you can reach a tenant)
    • If any admin center is accessible:
      • Go to Setup > Domains and check the Status column.
      • Use Check health on the domain to see any specific issues.
    1. When contacting Microsoft support To speed resolution, provide:
    • Organization name and domain
    • Registrar (GoDaddy) details
    • Proof of domain ownership (DNS or registrar record)
    • Any tenant ID or tenant name that appears in the error

Support entry points from the documentation:

    • For Microsoft 365 for business: sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center, select Help & Support, then Contact support.
    • For nonprofit-specific issues: use the Nonprofit “Contact Us” form.

The key action is to get Microsoft 365/Office 365 support to remove the domain from the unknown tenant after verifying ownership, since GoDaddy support has already exhausted their options.
