    Hi weena,

I’m really sorry to hear about your laptop being stolen, that must be stressful, with Windows licensing on top of it too. Note that an OEM (pre‑installed) license cannot be transferred, so the suggestions below apply only if you purchased a Retail license:

    • On your new laptop, open Settings › System › Activation
    • Click Change product key > enter the one you purchased
    • If your license was linked to your Microsoft account instead:
      • Sign in to Windows on the new laptop using the same Microsoft account
      • Go to Settings › Activation > if it’s not already activated, click Troubleshoot
      • Choose I changed hardware on this device recently > select your old device.

If it fails, I strongly suggest you reach out to chat service for real time support. Licensing issues often involve payment and personal information, which we cannot process on this community platform. Your best option is to reach out:

    1. Visit Contact Us - Microsoft Support > Sign in
    2. Choose Activation issue > click Get Help to make request
    3. Scroll to the bottom and click Contact Support to connect to agent
    4. Select category again > click Next and you should be added to a chat queue.

Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you.

If you bought the Windows key separately, you should be able to transfer it. If the auto-activation fails, then only the Support team can securely verify your purchase and license.

If the stolen laptop was running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and was already activated, the license is either:

    1. A digital license linked to a Microsoft account, or
    2. A product key (retail, OEM, or volume) tied to that device.

    From the provided information:

    • For digital licenses purchased from Microsoft or via the Microsoft Store app, the license is associated with the Microsoft account used for purchase. It can typically be reused to activate Windows on new hardware by signing in with the same Microsoft account and using activation options such as the troubleshooter or entering the key again, as long as the license terms allow transfer.
    • If the license was an OEM key preinstalled on the stolen laptop, it is tied to that device’s hardware and cannot be transferred.
    • If the license was a retail product key purchased separately (physical or digital copy), the key is in the original confirmation email, on the card/label in the box, or in the Microsoft account order history if bought from Microsoft. That same key can be entered on the new laptop, subject to activation rules.

To proceed based on the context:

    1. Check where the key came from:
      • If it was bought digitally from Microsoft:
        • Go to the Microsoft account Order history and locate the Windows purchase. The product key or digital license details are shown there.
      • If it was a physical copy from a retailer:
        • Use the key printed on the label or card inside the box.
    2. Activate Windows on the new laptop:
      • Install Windows 10 or Windows 11 on the new device (if not already installed). For installation media, see Download Windows 11 or Download Windows 10, or follow Create installation media for Windows.
      • During installation or afterward in Settings → Activation, enter the product key from the original purchase, or sign in with the same Microsoft account that holds the digital license.
    3. If activation fails:
      • Use the activation options described in Activate Windows and, if needed, Get help with Windows activation errors.
      • If the license is visible in the Microsoft account order history but cannot be reassigned automatically, activation by phone has been used successfully in similar cases.

If the key or license details cannot be recovered from email, packaging, or Microsoft account history, or if the license type is non-transferable (for example, OEM tied to the stolen device), a new Windows license will be required.
