    Dear Greer, Shaun

I understand it’s frustrating when Zoom shows a microphone is connected but you still can’t use it inside a meeting. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in both the AI generated answer and the Independent Advisor’s answer on your thread. Those replies typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario. To help narrow this down further, could you please share a few details:

    • Could you please confirm the brand and exact model of your device?
    • Which microphone are you using? Please include type and model (e.g., built‑in laptop mic, USB mic, Bluetooth headset with or without a USB dongle, or 3.5 mm wired headset).
    • Are you using a laptop with a hardware mic‑mute key/LED (often Fn+F4 or a key with a mic icon)? If yes, is the mic indicator off?
    • If you open the built‑in Voice Recorder app (type Voice Recorder in Start), can you record and play back your voice successfully?
    • If you use a Bluetooth headset, do you see a recording device named “Headset (Hands‑Free)” in Windows (not “Headphones (Stereo)”)?
    • Are you plugged through a USB hub/dock? If yes, does connecting the mic/headset directly to the PC change anything?

In the meantime, here are additional steps that you can try:

    1. Close apps that might be holding the microphone
    • Fully exit apps that can capture the mic in the background (Teams, Skype, browsers with web calls, screen recorders, Voice Recorder).
    • After closing them, restart Zoom and re‑join the meeting.
    1. Turn off “exclusive control” for the microphone
    • Open Control Panel > Sound > Recording tab.
    • Select your microphone > Properties > Advanced.
    • Uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device and Give exclusive mode applications priority
    • Click Apply > OK.
    1. Make sure the intended mic is enabled and set for calls
    • Control Panel > Sound > Recording tab.
    • Right‑click your mic > Enable (if it shows Disabled).
    • Right‑click it again > choose Set as Default Communication Device.
    • Speak into the mic and check it again.
    1. Disable audio enhancements that can interfere
    • In Control Panel > Sound > Recording > your mic Properties > Enhancements (or Advanced / Audio enhancements), select Disable all enhancements (or turn the toggle Off), then Apply.
    1. Verify per‑app audio routing for Zoom
    • Go to Settings > System > Sound > App volume and device preferences.
    • If Zoom appears, make sure Input is set to the specific microphone you intend to use (not muted and not an unintended device) and Volume slider for Zoom is not at 0.
    1. Keep Windows and device routing fresh
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install any pending updates (including Optional driver updates if available), then restart.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I hope these checks help restore your microphone in Zoom on Windows 10 so you can get back to your meetings with clear audio and minimal interruption.

    Hi,

I first suggest that you try the AI-suggested steps above. If the issue persists, let's check whether the microphone is not working on Zoom alone or in other apps as well.

    • Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.

Under Input, go to Choose a device for speaking or recording, and select your preferred device.

To test your microphone, speak into it and check the Volume section. Does the bar move?

    • What is the make and model of your device?

In the search bar, type MSINFO32 and hit Enter.

Please share a screenshot of that window.

    • Are you using the built-in Microphone or external one connected via Bluetooth, USB, or Jack?

Use these steps in Windows 10 to make sure the microphone can be used in Zoom:

    1. Turn on microphone access in Windows
      1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy.
      2. In the left pane, select Microphone under App permissions.
      3. Make sure Microphone access for this device is On.
      4. Make sure Allow apps to access your microphone is On.
      5. Scroll down and ensure Allow desktop apps to access your microphone is On (Zoom is a desktop app).
    2. Confirm the correct input device is selected
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      2. Under Input, choose the microphone that should be used in Choose your input device.
      3. Speak into the mic and check Test your microphone to confirm Windows is detecting sound.
    3. Check physical and connection issues
      1. If using a headset, make sure any Mute button on the headset is not active.
      2. Ensure the microphone or headset is firmly plugged in, or if it is Bluetooth, make sure it is paired and connected.
    4. If the microphone still does not work in Zoom
      1. Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter: Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Recording Audio.
      2. If Windows does not detect the microphone at all, reinstall audio drivers:
        • Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
        • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
        • Right-click the audio device, select Uninstall device, check the option to remove the driver, and select Uninstall.
        • Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the audio device and drivers automatically.

After these steps, rejoin the Zoom meeting and select the same microphone in Zoom’s audio settings.
