The message “An encrypted connection to your mail server is not available” indicates Outlook cannot set up a secure (SSL/TLS) connection to the mail server.
For home use, this typically happens in two scenarios covered in the context:
- Outlook is trying to auto-configure an Exchange account that is not supported for full Outlook/Exchange connectivity (for example, certain Microsoft 365 F plans).
- The server requires encryption or certificate settings that are not correctly configured on the client or not supported by the account type.
Use these steps to resolve or work around the issue:
- Verify what kind of account is being added
- If this is a Microsoft 365 work account, confirm with the service or admin that the plan supports Outlook/Exchange (MAPI) connections.
- If the mailbox is on a Microsoft 365 F plan, Outlook cannot connect using an Exchange connection. In that case, use one of the supported methods below.
- If the account is on a Microsoft 365 F plan
- Use Outlook on the web (browser) to access mail.
- Or configure Outlook using POP3 (or IMAP, if enabled) instead of Exchange Autodiscover:
- In Outlook, add a new account and choose manual setup.
- Select POP3/IMAP and enter the POP3/IMAP server, port, and SSL settings provided by the email service.
- If the account should support full Outlook/Exchange connectivity
- Confirm with the mail provider or admin that:
- SSL/TLS is enabled on the server endpoints Outlook is using.
- The correct Autodiscover and Exchange URLs are published.
- Any required encryption or certificate configuration on the server is correctly set.
- If the server requires an encrypted channel (SSL/TLS), ensure the Outlook profile is configured to use SSL for the Exchange connection and directory service, and that the certificate is valid and trusted.
- Confirm with the mail provider or admin that:
- If the error persists only in Outlook, but web access works
- Temporarily use Outlook on the web to ensure continued access while the server-side configuration (encryption/certificates or plan type) is checked and corrected.
If this is a Microsoft 365 F plan mailbox, the permanent solution is to use Outlook on the web or POP3/IMAP in Outlook, because full encrypted Exchange connectivity from Outlook is not supported for that plan.
