Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Did you check whether your phone’s messaging settings are blocking texts from unknown numbers?

    • Go to the Messages (SMS) settings on your mobile device and review the Blocked senders list. If the Microsoft number appears there, remove or unblock it.

    • Next, switch your Wi‑Fi connection to a different network, such as a mobile hotspot, and try requesting the verification code again. Sometimes delivery issues can be tied to a specific network.

If that doesn’t work, try another verification method such as your backup email address or the Microsoft Authenticator app (if you added one previously).

If you are still unable to receive the verification code, submit the account reinstatement form to the Microsoft account Digital Safety team. They will review your responses and reinstate your account if possible.

On the form, select "I am not receiving the provided code" and complete all required details.

Follow these steps in order, based on the current behavior (no 2FA codes arriving on the authorized mobile):

    1. Check common verification-code issues
    • Make sure the phone number on the account is a mobile number, not VOIP; VOIP numbers cannot receive Microsoft verification codes.
    • Confirm the phone is not blocking texts from unknown numbers. If it is, change that setting, then choose I don't have a code on the sign-in screen so a new SMS is sent.
    • Ensure the SMS inbox is not full and the messaging app is working correctly.
    • Avoid repeated code requests in a short time; excessive or repetitive requests can cause a temporary block where codes are not sent.
    • If in a region where Microsoft SMS is limited or temporarily unavailable, delivery may be delayed; waiting and retrying later may be required.

Details: Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues

    1. Try alternate verification methods on the account If the account has more than one sign-in method configured (backup email, additional phone, or Microsoft Authenticator):
    • On the verification screen, select I don't have a code or Try another verification method.
    • Choose an alternate method (e.g., email code instead of SMS, or Authenticator approval) and complete sign-in.

If a "Try another verification method" error appears and blocks sign-in:

    • Switch to a different network (e.g., from Wi‑Fi to mobile data, or another Wi‑Fi network).
    • Wait at least 24 hours without repeated attempts; repeated attempts can reset the time lock. If still blocked, wait longer (up to a week) before trying again.
    • Use the sign-in helper to diagnose the block: Start.

Reference: "How to fix 'Try another verification method' error message" in the verification-code troubleshooting article.

    1. If none of the security info works If access to the configured phone/email is lost or codes never arrive and no alternate method works:
    • On the sign-in verification page, select I don't have any of these.
    • Follow the prompts to start the account recovery process and update backup security info.

Reference: "I need to update backup security info in to my Microsoft account" in the verification-code troubleshooting article.

    1. If the account is locked or blocked If the sign-in page does not show Next or indicates the account is locked:
    • Follow the aka.ms/ link shown on the lock screen and complete the reinstatement form.
    • After submitting, wait for the Microsoft Online Safety team to review and respond by email; do not submit multiple forms.

Reference: "Microsoft account has been locked" article.

    1. Use automated tools and contact support if needed
    • If sign-in is still not possible, run the sign-in helper: Sign-in helper.
    • For additional technical help (note: agents cannot send codes or change security info), go to Contact Microsoft Support, describe the problem, select Get Help, then Contact Support if offered.

If the account is an Outlook.com/Hotmail account and general sign-in help is needed, see: Get help with Outlook.com.

Because 2FA is enabled, it cannot be turned off or bypassed without successfully completing one of the configured verification methods or the recovery flow above.
