How to search Teams Messages for a specific Emoji (BUG?)

Hi Team, I am putting the ⚠️ emoji in messages, quotes etc. when I see someone raise data issues. The goal is to then search teams for that Emokji and it will bring up everything I've marked as a data issue.

When I do search in the search bar, my messages come up. But when I click view all results, nothing comes up.

What do I need to do to see all results when I search for the emoji?

    Hello @Finn Roberts,

Thank you for sharing your information.

From the information you provided, it appears that you are experiencing an issue when searching for a specific icon in Microsoft Teams. You mentioned that although the icon appears in the initial search results, selecting “View all messages” shows no results in the Teams desktop application.

After checking, there is currently no public Microsoft documentation that mentions searching for messages using a specific emoji or icon. However, from my own testing, I observed the following:

    • Icons appearing in Teams messages cannot be copied directly from Teams and pasted into the search bar.
    • When using emojis from the Windows emoji keyboard (such as Win + V), some emojis can be pasted into the search bar, but the results vary depending on the emoji.
    • With the specific warning icon you tested, the search returned no results, which aligns with your experience.

Since emoji‑only queries may not be fully supported by Teams’ search engine, I would highly recommend contacting the Microsoft Technical Support team to verify whether the search system processes that emoji as a searchable value on the back end. As a moderator, I have limited access to back‑end tools and tenant‑level diagnostics. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

To get further assistance, Global Admin can create a service request with Microsoft Support for advanced troubleshooting and back‑end investigation. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

When you open a support ticket, please make sure to turn off the Support Assistant (AI) in the help panel as shown in the screenshot, simply switch Support Assistant → Off, then type your issue description. Once the AI is off, the “Contact Support” button will appear normally, allowing you to submit a ticket directly. .

(Several customers have reported issues when the Support Assistant is turned on the system sometimes fails to display the “Contact Support” option)

Please feel free to let me know if you have any update or further concern. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Teams search supports finding messages by keywords, people, and other filters, but the documented behavior focuses on text, not on reliably using a single emoji as the only search term. When entering the emoji in the main search box, the initial “Top results” list can show some matches, but the “View all messages” experience and filters are optimized for text queries and KQL modifiers and may not return results when the query is only an emoji. This is a limitation of the current search experience rather than something that can be fixed by a setting.

To make these messages reliably searchable:

    1. Add a unique text tag together with the emoji in each message, for example: ⚠️ DATA-ISSUE.
    2. In the Teams search box, search for that text tag (for example, DATA-ISSUE).
    3. Use the message filters (Type, Teams and channels, From, Date, Has attachments, etc.) or KQL modifiers like from:Name, in:ChannelName, or sent:YYYY-MM-DD to narrow the results if needed.

This way, both the initial results and the “View all messages” view will be based on a text keyword that Teams search fully supports.
