If a Windows product key is used many times in a short space of time, that can sometimes cause the activation servers to block the key.

Try using the Troubleshoot method, select 'I changed my hardware', then select the previously activated device in the list to try to move the licence.

If that process is unsuccessful, try the process on this link to activate Windows.

If that process is also unsuccessful, this forum is just a user to user forum, you will need to contact Microsoft Support directly, provide them with your product key and proof of purchase and they will be able to activate your Windows licence.

The product key is now seen as already used on another device because Windows associates a license with the first hardware it activates on, even if the original installation did not complete successfully.

Use these steps and options from the documentation:

    1. Run the Activation troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • If Windows isn’t activated, select Troubleshoot.
      • If prompted with Windows can’t be activated on your device, choose I changed hardware on this device recently and follow the steps to try to reactivate on the new motherboard.
      • Details: Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
    2. If the key is reported as already used or invalid
      • Error codes like 0xC004C003, 0xC004C008, 0xC004C770, or 0x803FA071 indicate the key is not valid for activation or has already been used on another device.
      • In that case, try:
        • Running the Activation troubleshooter again from Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
        • If you have the 25‑character key from the USB package, re‑enter it via Change product key on the Activation page.
    3. If activation still fails after hardware change
      • For substantial hardware changes like a motherboard replacement, documentation recommends either:
        • Using the hardware‑change path in the Activation troubleshooter (step 1), or
        • Activating by phone if you have a valid product key and the troubleshooter does not resolve it. On Windows 11, this is suggested when a valid key exists but online activation fails after hardware changes.
    4. When a new license is required
      • If the key is permanently blocked or not eligible for reuse on new hardware, Windows will continue to show that it’s used on different hardware and will not activate.
      • In that situation, the only supported resolution is to purchase a new Windows 11 license:
        • Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation, then select Go to Microsoft Store and follow the prompts.

These are the supported ways to resolve activation errors after a motherboard change without buying another license unless the key is no longer valid.
