    Hello Henrietta Morrison,

I realize that you've encountered a problem with editing files in Word. I truly understand your confusion. Let me assist you further.

For me to provide the most accurate solution, would you please let me know few information about the situation you're experiencing:

    1. Which app are you opening the document in?
      • Microsoft Word app
      • Microsoft 365 / Copilot app
    2. Do you have a Microsoft 365 subscription?
      • Personal
      • Family (are you the organizer or a member?)
      • Not sure / expired
    3. When you open the document in the Word app, do you see “Read‑Only” anywhere at the top?
      • Yes
      • No
    4. Does this happen with ALL Word documents, or only specific ones?
      • All documents
      • Only shared documents
      • Only one specific file
    5. Are you signed into more than one Microsoft account on the iPad?
      • Yes (multiple emails/accounts)
      • No (only one)

I am looking forward for your respond. Thank you so much for your times.

    Best Regard,

On iPad, loss of editing in Word documents is usually caused by one of these:

    1. File type or protection
      • If the file is .doc (older format), .odt, or .txt, it opens as read-only on iOS. To edit, it must be converted to .docx.
      • If the file is IRM‑protected or Password‑to‑Modify protected, it will also open read‑only.
      • Macro‑enabled (.docm) files open read‑only on iPad.
      On iPad, Word supports:
      • .docx – open and edit
      • .doc – read‑only (must be updated to .docx to edit)
      • .odt – read‑only (must be updated to .docx to edit)
      • .docm – read‑only
If the document is not .docx, save/convert it to .docx (for example from a PC/Mac or by using Word on another device) and then reopen it on the iPad.
    2. Document marked as final or restricted
      • If the document is marked as final or has restricted permissions, editing and formatting (cut, paste, highlight) can be disabled.
      • In that case, the document will show a message about being final or restricted and will not allow normal editing.
    3. Coauthoring / shared document issues
      • If the file is shared from OneDrive, SharePoint, or Dropbox and:
        • It is a .doc file (not .docx), or
        • It is macro‑enabled (.docm), or
        • It has restricted permissions, then simultaneous editing is blocked and the document may behave as read‑only on iPad.
    4. License or subscription status
      • If the Microsoft 365 subscription used on the iPad has expired, Word may allow opening but not editing or saving documents.
      • Renewing the Microsoft 365 subscription and signing back in restores editing.

To restore editing on iPad Word:

    1. Confirm the document is .docx (not .doc, .docm, .odt, etc.). If not, convert it to .docx.
    2. Make sure the document is not IRM‑protected, not password‑to‑modify, and not marked as final.
    3. If the file is shared, ensure it is a standard .docx without macros or special restrictions.
    4. Check that the Microsoft 365 subscription is active and that Word on iPad is signed in with that account.

Copilot’s presence in the interface does not itself remove editing capabilities; the issue will be one of the conditions above.
