What's with the daily email cap?

I can't send emails and get a daily cap message even though I have only sent one email to one recipient in 24 hours.
I have never had this issue before - is that a new feature? Is it possible to get in touch with anyone from Outlook/Microsoft to get this sorted.

    Hi Cora,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how confusing this can be, especially when the message appears even though you’ve only sent a single email.

The answer provided by Q&A Assist is generally accurate in explaining that Outlook.com applies sending limits and temporary restrictions to protect the service. If you’ve had a chance to review or try the steps suggested there, please let me know how it went.

To add some context that may help: The “daily email cap” message does not always mean the numeric limit was reached. For Outlook.com personal accounts, sending can also be temporarily limited based on account trust and recent activity signals. This means a restriction can appear even with very low sending volume, for example after changes in sign-in behavior, network location, or other activity the service flags as unusual.

In many cases, these restrictions are temporary and are lifted automatically once the account activity stabilizes. During this time, continuing to retry sending typically does not help and may prolong the restriction.

I hope this clarifies why the message can appear despite minimal usage. Please feel free to share whether you were able to try the earlier suggestions, and I can add more guidance if needed.

Outlook.com enforces daily sending limits to protect against spam and abuse. Even if only one message was sent, the account can still hit a temporary cap if the system flags unusual activity or if the account is new or has a low sending quota.

    Key points from Outlook.com limits:

    1. Outlook.com has daily limits on:
      • Total recipients per day
      • Maximum recipients per message
      • Daily non-relationship recipients (people not emailed before)
    2. New or recently created Outlook.com accounts start with a lower sending quota. This is a temporary restriction and is automatically increased as credibility is established through normal use.
    3. If the account is blocked or restricted due to unusual sign-in or sending activity, sending can be limited even if the visible usage is low.

    What to do next:

    1. Check whether the account is blocked or restricted
      • Follow the guidance in “Can't send or receive email in Outlook.com” to see if the account has been temporarily blocked and how to unblock your Outlook.com account.
    2. Review sending limits
      • See “Sending limits in Outlook.com” for details on daily recipients, per‑message limits, and how new accounts have lower temporary quotas.
    3. Contact Outlook.com support
      • In Outlook.com, select Help on the menu bar, enter the issue (for example, “daily sending limit reached even with few emails”), then scroll to Still need help? and choose Yes to reach support.
      • If sign‑in is not possible, use the dedicated “can't sign in” support entry point described under Still need help? in the Outlook.com help article.

Support can review the account status and advise if the restriction is temporary or if additional verification is required.
