I have tried the following but the issue still remains

-different internet browser (Edge and Chrome)

-Incognito mode on both browsers

-tried using my mobile phone (iPhone 17) on mobile data

-used a different phone number

After a live chat conversation with Microsoft Support, they have advised me to post my question in here for help

    Hello,

I am a French user and I have been having the same problem for several days.

I am unable to register for the Microsoft 365 developer program.

I get the same error 50001 when I enter my French phone number. I have tried contacting support several times via chat, but no one can help me.

I really need to register so I can practice, but I'm stuck...

Please help us, because many of us on various forums are having the same problem.

    Hello Lloyd Lewis
Please note that Q&A forum is a public platform, and moderators will modify the question to hide personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.
Thank you for posting question to Microsoft Q&A Forum.
Regarding the Developer Program signup error (50001): This error commonly occurs during the phone verification step of the Microsoft 365 Developer Program registration. In many cases, it happens when the phone number has already been associated with another Developer Program account or has reached the allowed verification limit. One possible workaround is to remove the existing Developer Program profile associated with that phone number or attempt the signup process using a completely different phone number. You may refer to the official Microsoft 365 Developer Program FAQ for additional details on verification requirements. If using a new phone number still results in the same error, the appropriate next step would be to contact Microsoft Developer Support. Support requests related to the Developer Program are typically handled through the Services Hub. Please note that access to the Services Hub depends on your organization’s support agreement and may require a paid support plan. You can review the requirements and sign-in conditions in the Services Hub sign-in FAQs before submitting a request.
As I am only forum moderator, I do not have access to internal Microsoft system to check this for you. All of the published threads related to this issue only pointed for contacting support. I'd suggest to wait for the next day or the following days and try again before attempting to contact Microsoft Support Team.
I hope this information helps clarify the situation.

Error 50001 during Microsoft 365 Developer Program sign-up is a backend sign-up failure, not a browser or device issue. From the available information, there are two common constraints to check that are directly related to Developer Program sign-up:

    1. Only one Developer Program account per phone number
      • The program allows only one Microsoft 365 Developer Program account per phone number.
      • If that phone number is already associated with an existing Developer Program profile (even from the past), new sign-up with the same number will fail.
      • Resolution: If access to the old Developer Program profile is available, sign in to the dashboard and choose Delete Profile, then wait until eligibility conditions are met and try sign-up again with that phone number. Alternatively, use a different phone number that is not already associated with a Developer Program account.
    2. Unsupported account types for sign-up
      • Sign-up must use one of the supported account types:
        • Work account (Microsoft Entra ID / organizational account)
        • Visual Studio ID
        • Microsoft account (personal)
      • Phone-number-only sign-in or *.onmicrosoft.com accounts are not supported for Developer Program sign-up. Attempting to use these can cause sign-up failures.
      • Resolution: Use a supported work, Visual Studio, or Microsoft account email address (not a phone number login and not an onmicrosoft.com address) when starting the Developer Program sign-up, then proceed to the phone verification step.

If the phone number is unique and a supported account type is used but error 50001 continues to appear, the remaining action is to contact Microsoft support with the correlation ID shown in the error so that the backend sign-up failure can be investigated and corrected.
