- The exact error message you see (a screenshot is perfect).
- Does the issue happen with all documents or a specific file only?
- If you try a new blank document, can you type normally?
- Any add‑ins recently installed/updated?
- Where is the file stored (email attachment, OneDrive/SharePoint, network drive)?
- Your Microsoft Word/Office version (Microsoft 365, 2021, 2019…) and whether it’s activated.

In the meantime, as a workaround, you may try the steps below:
1/ New blank doc:
Open Word > Blank document > try typing.
2/ Enable editing:
If you see a yellow bar (“Protected View” / “Read‑Only”), click Enable Editing.
Also check Review > Restrict Editing and turn it off if active.
3/ Safe Mode test:
Press Win + R > winword /safe > Enter.
If typing works in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add‑ins > Go… and uncheck all add‑ins.
Restart Word and re‑enable add‑ins one by one to find the culprit.
4/ Save locally:
Use File > Save As to save a copy to Desktop/Documents and test there (avoid network locations or opening directly from email).
If you have an active Microsoft 365 license and need to take notes immediately, you might consider:
- Open Word online and try typing there.
- OneNote for quick, searchable notes.
- Sticky Notes or Notepad for very quick text capture.
