I’m trying to upgrade my laptop from Windows 7 (64-bit, 8 GB RAM, Intel i5-5200U) to Windows 10. When I use the Media Creation Tool, I get the error 0x80072F8F – 0x20000. Can you guide me on how to complete the upgrade safely while keeping my files?

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

This error is also very common when upgrading from Windows 7 to 10. It usually occurs when there is a problem with the date and time, security certificate, or networking that prevents Windows from validating the upgrade.

This list will be the start of the troubleshooting.

    1. Backup files before upgrading.(Most Important) - I suggest to backup first before going full troubleshooting
    2. Correct your system date/time.
    3. Install all Windows 7 updates, especially KB3033929.
    4. Provide me the make and model of your device

Complete these steps first then let me know so I can assist you further.
