For a Windows 7 Starter local account, use one of these supported methods to reset the forgotten password.
- Reset from the sign-in screen (if security questions or reset disk exist)
- At the Windows sign-in screen, select the password entry field.
- Select OK and then Reset password.
- If prompted, answer the security questions configured when the account was created.
- If a password reset disk was created earlier, choose Use a password reset disk instead and follow the wizard.
- Reset from another local administrator account If there is another account on the PC with administrator rights:
- Sign in with that administrator account.
- Open Computer Management.
- In the left pane, expand Local Users and Groups > Users.
- In the right pane, right-click the user that needs a new password and select Set Password....
- Enter and confirm the new password.
- If there is no other administrator and no reset options If there is no admin account available and no security questions or reset disk configured, the supported option is to reset the Windows device:
- Follow the guidance in Reset your PC to reinstall Windows. This will affect installed apps and settings, and may affect data depending on the reset option chosen.
If the account is a Microsoft account (used to sign in to Windows), reset that password online:
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and select Forgotten your password? or use Reset password.
- Enter the Microsoft account username and select Next.
- Choose a verification method, select Get code, then retrieve the code from the chosen email or phone.
- Enter the verification code, then create a new password.
