In the new Outlook for Windows, folder “parent/child” relationships and folder order are controlled directly in the Folder Pane; there is no separate “parent folder settings” dialog.
To work with parent/child folders and their order in new Outlook:
- Go to Mail.
- On the ribbon, select View > Folder pane.
- Choose Custom folder order.
- To change a folder’s parent (make it a subfolder or move it back to the top level), drag and drop the folder:
- Drag a folder onto another folder to make it a subfolder (child) of that folder.
- Drag a subfolder out to the main list to make it a top-level folder again.
- To change the order of folders under the same parent, either:
- Drag and drop the folder up or down, or
- Right‑click the folder and select Move up or Move down.
If the folder order becomes confusing and alphabetical order is preferred instead of a custom hierarchy/order, use:
- View > Sort Folders > Order folders A to Z.
This resets the visible order under each parent to alphabetical. To go back to a custom order, re‑select View > Folder pane > Custom folder order.
Note: Default folders such as Search, Shared with me, and In-place archive cannot be moved and always appear last for the account.
