Word asks to save changes when none are made

Every time I open a word file just to read it (I don't make any changes), it automatically asks me to save it. This is rather annoying because it updates the last saved date and time even though I haven't actually made any changes to the document. Is this a bug or a setting issue?

Do you need further assistance with this?

As suggested by Ferdinand Nagalig, excessive save prompts have been linked to the use of Copilot. Beyond that, note that certain actions in Word (updating fields, printing) may trigger save prompts (applies to Word for Mac and Word for Windows alike).

Sometimes, exiting Word and renaming the Normal template may fix inexplicable and unneeded requests to save docs.

Hi! Let me help you with this issue.

Please try to disable CoPilot in MS Word and see if it works.

This behavior is typically caused by Word detecting changes to the global template (Normal.dotm) or by add-ins/macros that modify it, even when no visible edits are made to the document itself. It is a setting/environment issue, not a simple bug.

    Common causes:

    1. The option Prompt before saving Normal template is turned on, so Word asks to save whenever the global template is changed.
    2. An add-in or macro is changing the global template in the background.
    3. Less commonly, a macro virus is modifying the global template.

To reduce or stop the prompts (while still being aware of the risks):

    1. Turn off the prompt (stops the message, but not the underlying changes)
      • In Word, go to File > Options > Advanced.
      • Under Save, clear Prompt before saving Normal template.
      • Word will then automatically save changes to Normal.dotm without asking.
    2. Check for add-ins or templates that change the global template
      • Remove or disable add-ins that load at startup and may be modifying Normal.dotm. These can be WLL files, templates, COM add-ins, or automatic macros loaded from Word/Office Startup folders.
      • The documented workaround is to temporarily remove items from the Startup folders and test again. If the prompts stop, reintroduce items one by one to find the culprit.
    3. Ensure the system is not infected with a macro virus

Note: Turning off Prompt before saving Normal template only suppresses the dialog; it does not stop the template from being changed. For a proper fix, identify and remove the add-in/macro or address any malware.
