Background Personalization issues

I'm having a persistent issue with my Windows background. I keep trying to set a specific photo as my wallpaper, but Windows continues to overwrite it—I assume due to a Theme or sync setting. I haven't been able to figure out the cause.

This is becoming extremely frustrating. Do you know how I can disable whatever is overriding my choice so my selected photo stays put?

Thanks for your help!

    Hi Dennis J Furgione,

Thanks for posting. I understand how frustrating it is when Windows keeps undoing a setting you’ve intentionally chosen. Please try the following:

Step 1: Check whether the active theme is overriding your wallpaper

    1. Go to Settings > “Personalization” > “Themes”
    2. Temporarily switch to “Windows (light)” or “Windows (dark)”
    3. Go back to Background and set your photo again

Step 2: Disable Microsoft account personalization sync

If you sign in with a Microsoft account, Windows can re‑apply a theme from the cloud.

    1. Open Settings > “Accounts” > “Windows backup”
    2. Turn off “Remember my preferences”
      • Or specifically turn off “Personalization”
    3. Restart the PC, then set your wallpaper again

    If you use virtual desktops:

    1. Go to Settings > Personalization > Background
    2. Right‑click the image under “Recent images”
    3. Choose “Set for all desktops”

Otherwise, Windows may keep applying a different image when switching desktops

    Hi, good day!

    • When was the last time it worked properly?
    • Have you made any changes to your computer recently?

Have you tried the steps below to Turn off Sync?

Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup

Toggle off both "Remember my apps" & "Remember my preferences" options

    Restart your computer

I look forward to receiving your update and I'm willing to collaborate with you till we resolve the issue. Do keep me informed by clicking "Add comment" below.
