By default, Word 365 stores its documents in OneDrive. You can change that, if you want, or you can have File Explorer show the contents of OneDrive, as you wish.

    Hi Mohga Kamal-Yanni,

Apologies for any inconvenience you're encountering.

In recent Windows 11 security updates, File Explorer may limit previews for certain files, such as Word documents and PDFs, when they are identified as coming from the internet (for example, email attachments or downloaded files). This is a protective measure designed to reduce potential security risks.

If you trust the file and its source, you can restore the preview with the following steps:

    • Right‑click the Word or PDF file
    • Select Properties
    • On the General tab, select Unblock
    • Close the window

Once unblocked, the Preview pane should display the file contents again (you may need to sign out and back in).

Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

Windows File Explorer can have several different issues with Office documents and previews. Based on the available information, try these specific checks and fixes:

    1. Update Microsoft Office
      • There is a known issue where Office document properties and integration with File Explorer do not work correctly until Office is updated.
      • Open any Office app (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint).
      • Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • After the update completes, restart the PC and test File Explorer again.
    2. Repair Office to fix file associations and preview handlers
      • Open Control Panel.
      • Select Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Select the Microsoft 365/Office product.
      • Choose Change.
      • Select Quick Repair, then Repair.
      • When finished, restart and try opening/previewing Word and PDF files again from File Explorer.
    3. Re‑associate Office file types if double‑clicking opens the wrong app
      • Open Control Panel.
      • Select Programs > Default Programs.
      • Choose Set a default for a file type or link type.
      • For .doc and .docx, set the default to Word.
      • For .ppt/.pptx and .xls/.xlsx, set the corresponding Office apps.
      • Select OK.
    4. If preview is the only thing failing
      • For Word/Excel/PowerPoint: if the preview pane shows an error like “This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Word previewer,” open the document directly in the Office app instead of relying on the preview pane.
      • For PDFs: for full visual accuracy, open PDFs in a dedicated PDF reader such as Acrobat Reader; Word’s PDF handling is not guaranteed to display every PDF correctly.

If these steps restore normal opening of files but preview in the Explorer pane still fails for some formats, use the dedicated app (Word or a PDF reader) to open files directly while continuing to troubleshoot previews.
