Snipping Tool screen recordings can stop and disappear if the capture is not completed and saved through the app. Snipping Tool does not auto‑save recordings unless both of these are true:
- The recording is finished by selecting Stop recording in the Snipping Tool UI.
- The Snipping Tool setting Automatically save original screen recordings is turned on.
If the app or Windows suspends the recording session (for example, the app is closed, crashes, or the system sleeps), the temporary recording can be lost and will not appear in your saved videos.
To reduce the chance of losing recordings when capturing classes on Windows 11:
- Start recordings from Snipping Tool directly
- Select Start, type Snipping Tool, and open it.
- Select the Video icon, then New.
- Drag to select the area to record and select Start.
- Always stop the recording explicitly
- When the class segment is finished, select Stop recording (the Stop button) in Snipping Tool.
- Confirm the recording is visible in Snipping Tool and save it to a known folder before closing the app.
- Turn on automatic saving for recordings
- In Snipping Tool, open Settings and enable the option to automatically save original screen recordings (if available in your build). This helps preserve files even if the window is closed after stopping.
- Avoid long single recordings
- For long classes, create several shorter recordings (for example, per topic or per hour) so that if one session fails, only a small portion is affected.
If Snipping Tool continues to stop on its own and not show the video after you press Stop recording, use an alternative built‑in recorder while troubleshooting, such as Xbox Game Bar (Win + G) or Clipchamp, both of which are supported screen‑recording tools on Windows 11.
