I wanted to know if there is a way to retrieve emails to me later than 2011. I never deleted them and I can only see them through 2011.

    Hi Brent Gowans

From your description, I understand that you can only see email back to 2011, in Outlook.com, even though you never deleted anything.

To avoid any confusion, the Q&A Assist reply shown under your post looks unrelated (it talks about a deceased person), so it doesn’t address your situation.

Just to confirm, did you ever use classic Outlook (or another email app) set up as POP on a computer around 2011? Microsoft notes POP often removes mail from the server after downloading, which would explain exactly why webmail only shows mail up to a certain year. You can see What are IMAP and POP? - Microsoft Support

1, First, confirm the older mail isn’t just in another folder

    • Sign in to Outlook on the web
    • Double-check all folders (Inbox, Junk Email, Deleted Items, Archive, any custom folders you may have created years ago), ensure your inbox filter is set to All (not “Unread” or another filter).
    • Check Focused / Other tab (if Focused Inbox is enabled), emails may land in Other. You can also temporarily turn Focused Inbox off to test.

2, The older mail may not be on the server anymore (most common with POP)

If you used a desktop email program years ago (like classic Outlook) configured as POP, POP typically downloads mail to the computer and then deletes it from the email service. Microsoft explains that with POP, after messages are downloaded, they may no longer be available from webmail or other devices. In that case, Outlook.com can’t show or restore mail that isn’t stored on the server anymore, the only place it may still exist is the local Outlook data file (PST) on the old computer or in a backup.

    3, About recovery tools

Outlook has options to recover recently deleted items (Deleted Items / "Recover items deleted from this folder"), but that’s typically useful for recent deletions, not for emails missing since 2011, those recovery windows are limited. Please see Recover and restore deleted items in Outlook - Microsoft Support

If I have misunderstood your situation, please don't hesitate to clarify, and I will adjust my recommendations accordingly.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes so I can guide you further. I truly appreciate your time and understanding.

For a deceased person’s personal Outlook.com/Hotmail/Live/MSN account, Microsoft generally cannot give non-account holders access to email or other account contents for privacy and legal reasons.

If OneDrive Digital Legacy or any similar access arrangement was not set up in advance, Microsoft is generally unable to provide information or content from the account to others.

If legal access is required (for example, for estate matters), the only available path is to seek legal guidance and have the appropriate party obtain and serve a valid subpoena or court order on Microsoft’s registered agent in the relevant state or region. After receiving such legal process, Microsoft will review it and decide, based on applicable laws, whether any account content can be released. Even with a subpoena or court order, release of content is not guaranteed.

There is no self-service or support-based method to retrieve a deceased user’s emails (including messages after 2011) without going through this formal legal process.
