Use the account recovery and sign-in tools for the main Microsoft account, then retry the Family invite.
- Since the main account cannot sign in properly while the secondary account works, first check whether the main account can sign in anywhere else:
- Try signing in to another Microsoft service (for example Outlook.com or OneDrive) with the main account.
- If the password is not accepted or the account is locked, follow the recovery steps below.
- If the main account password is forgotten, reset it:
- Follow the steps in Reset your password to change the password for the main account.
- If the password is known but sign-in “just stopped working” or shows generic errors like “Something went wrong, try again later”:
- Use the Sign-in Helper tool to diagnose and fix sign-in issues for the main account.
- If there are problems receiving verification codes when trying to sign in or accept the invite:
- Follow the guidance in troubleshoot Microsoft account verification code issues to fix SMS/email code problems.
- If the username/email for the main account is not being recognized when trying to accept the invite:
- Use Look up your Microsoft account if the email/username might be wrong.
- If the message says the account doesn’t exist or the username is not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper tool as directed.
- If access to the main account is still blocked after recovery attempts:
- Complete the Microsoft account recovery form using as much accurate information as possible.
- If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened; in that case a new Microsoft account would be required to join the family.
After successfully signing in to the main account on another Microsoft service (for example Outlook.com), sign out everywhere, then:
- Sign in to the Family Safety/Family portal with the main account only.
- Have the organizer resend the family invite to the main account’s email address.
- Open the new invite while signed in with the main account and accept it.
If the error persists only for this account after these steps, contact Microsoft Support and reference that the main account cannot complete sign-in/acceptance while other accounts can, and that recovery steps have already been tried.
