A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Creating a Microsoft passkey on an Android device requires both a supported OS version and a supported passkey provider/sign-in method. From the available information, the following points apply:
- Check Android version support
Passkeys for Microsoft accounts require at least Android 9.
For Passkeys in Microsoft Authenticator, Android 14 or newer is required. If the Huawei tablet is running an older Android version than these, passkey creation can fail for that reason. - Check that the device can act as a passkey provider
On Android, passkeys can be stored either in:
- The platform passkey manager (Google/Android passkey provider), or
- Microsoft Authenticator (when supported).
For Authenticator as a passkey provider (work/school scenario in the docs):
- Authenticator must be enabled as a passkey provider in Android Settings under Passwords & accounts → Additional providers → Authenticator.
- A screen lock must be configured on the device. If these options are missing or cannot be enabled on the Huawei tablet, the device may not fully support the required passkey flow.
- Organization or account type limitations
For work/school accounts, an organization must explicitly allow passkeys. If trying to create a passkey for a work/school account and the tenant does not support it, creation will fail regardless of device. - Alternative registration flow if Authenticator sign-in fails (Android)
If there are problems registering a passkey directly in Authenticator, it is possible (where allowed) to:
- Go to Security info at
https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info. - Choose to add a Passkey or Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator.
- Use the Having trouble → create your passkey a different way → Android flow to register via WebAuthn. This still requires a compatible Android device and working Bluetooth/Internet if cross-device registration is used.
Given this, the issue is most likely one of:
- The Huawei tablet’s Android version is below the required level (especially for Authenticator-based passkeys), or
- The tablet does not expose/allow the necessary passkey provider settings, or
- The account/tenant does not allow passkeys.
Trying on a different, fully supported device (Android 14+ with Authenticator as passkey provider, or a recent iOS device, or Windows 10/11 with a security key) is a good way to confirm whether the problem is specific to the Huawei tablet.
