Outlook.com Incorrectly Reporting Storage Full

Outlook.com is reporting my storage is full.

It reports 2.4gb for email. and 0.8gb for OneDrive.

the Microsoft account report says it is not full as well.

Also how does it work that I have 15gb for email but only 5gb for Microsoft storage but my email is being lumped into the 5gb for Microsoft storage?

This appears to have happened when I accidentally put some large files in a folder backed up by OneDrive. I have since removed those files and deleted them from the recycle bin in OneDrive however Outlook.com still reports storage full a day later.

Thanks, Keith. Everything is fine - I hope Onedrive is not again uploading the large file you just deleted.

The warning message should disappear in 48 hours. This is something which is seen previously too.

Outlook.com and OneDrive now share a single Microsoft “unified storage” quota. The “storage is full” message is based on this unified cloud storage, not just the mailbox size.

    Key points for this scenario:

    1. What “Microsoft Unified Storage is full” means
      • It means the combined Microsoft cloud storage quota has been exceeded, not necessarily the mailbox quota alone.
      • When this happens:
        • Uploading, editing, or syncing new files to OneDrive is blocked; existing files become read‑only.
        • Sending or receiving email in Outlook.com is blocked, even if the mailbox itself is under its separate email quota.
        • Teams messages with attachments are also blocked.
      • This behavior is described under “Microsoft Unified Storage is full” and “If you’ve exceeded your storage quota.”
    2. Why Outlook.com still shows “storage full” after deleting files
      • If the unified storage quota was exceeded when large files were added to a OneDrive‑backed folder, Outlook.com correctly blocked mail.
      • After deleting those files (and emptying the OneDrive recycle bin), it can take some time for the quota status to update across all services and stop showing “storage full.”
      • While the Microsoft account page and OneDrive view may already show low usage (for example, 1.4 GB / 5 GB), Outlook.com can still be enforcing the previous “over quota” state until the unified storage system fully refreshes.
    3. Relationship between email quota and Microsoft storage quota
      • There are two related but distinct limits:
        • Microsoft cloud storage (OneDrive + other cloud content) – this is the “Microsoft storage” / “unified storage” quota (e.g., 5 GB for free accounts).
        • Email storage – the mailbox size limit (for consumers, up to 100 GB with certain subscriptions).
      • If the Microsoft cloud storage quota is exceeded:
        • Outlook.com mail flow is blocked even if the mailbox is under its email storage limit.
      • If only the email storage quota is exceeded:
        • Outlook.com mail flow is also blocked, and incoming messages are bounced until usage is reduced.
      • This is why an account can show plenty of mailbox space (e.g., “2.4 GB used of 15 GB”) but still be blocked because the unified Microsoft storage (e.g., 5 GB) was exceeded at some point.
    4. How to restore service
      • Ensure the unified storage is truly under quota:
        • Confirm OneDrive usage is below the limit and that large files are removed and the OneDrive recycle bin is emptied.
      • If using a free account:
      • If already a Microsoft 365 subscriber:
        • Consumer mailbox limits are capped at 100 GB; if unified storage is still over quota, free up space in OneDrive and other cloud content.
      • After freeing space, allow some time for the unified storage system to update; once back under quota, Outlook.com will resume sending and receiving mail. Any messages bounced while over quota must be resent by the senders.
