A family of Microsoft presentation graphics products that offer tools for creating presentations and adding graphic effects like multimedia objects and special effects with text.
Hi Karl Schmitt,
Based on what you’ve tested, this looks much more like a PowerPoint re‑initialization issue with virtual cameras, rather than a problem with the virtual camera itself.
The key indicator is that the virtual camera continues to work normally in other apps (such as Teams), and PowerPoint can sometimes detect it again only after another app activates the feed first. That strongly suggests PowerPoint is not reliably reconnecting to the virtual camera after you stop, clear, or retake a recording even though the virtual device is still available to the system.
A few things that may help reduce how often this occurs:
- If you’re using a Cameo object, try Reset Picture / Reset to Cameo on the Cameo instead of deleting or clearing the recording. This may help preserve the camera connection during retakes.
- Start the virtual camera before opening PowerPoint, then enter Record mode.
- Once the feed is stable, try to record in one continuous session. If you need to pause, use Pause rather than Stop. Stopping and then starting a new recording on another slide appears to be the action most likely to trigger the connection loss.
- Make sure Office is fully up to date, as PowerPoint’s recording and camera handling has changed across Microsoft 365 builds.
For more consistent results, one option is to bypass PowerPoint’s live presenter video recording entirely: record your camera feed first in another app (such as Teams, OBS, or your virtual camera software), then insert the finished video into PowerPoint. This avoids PowerPoint needing to repeatedly reconnect to the virtual camera after each retake.
Based on everything you’ve already tested, the virtual camera itself does not appear to be the root cause. The behavior is much more consistent with PowerPoint losing the virtual camera feed when a recording session is stopped and restarted.
Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like further assistance.
