In Device Manager, IEEE 1394 (FireWire) host controllers appear under the node named IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers. If a FireWire card is correctly installed and its driver is loaded, the entry typically looks similar to:
-
IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers-
Generic 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller - or
1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)
-
If this node is not visible at all:
- The card may not be detected (not seated properly, or hardware issue).
- The driver may not be installed.
On Windows 8/8.1 (and similarly when using the legacy driver package), after installing the 1394 OHCI Legacy Driver.msi, the documented steps to bind the legacy driver are:
- Right‑click
Legacy1394.infin:-
C:\Program Files\1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)\x86_driveror -
C:\Program Files\1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)\x64_driverand select Install.
-
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers and locate the host controller.
- Right‑click the host controller → Update Driver Software.
- Choose Browse my computer for driver software.
- Choose Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
- Select Generic 1394 OHCI compliant host controller (Legacy) → Next.
If the IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers category still does not appear after installing the card and drivers, the system is not detecting the card at all and hardware seating, slot, or card failure should be checked.
