Use an app password from AOL instead of the normal AOL account password when adding the account to Outlook.
For new Outlook for Windows:
- In Outlook, go to View > View settings or File > Account info.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Under Email accounts, select Add Account.
- Enter the AOL email address and select Continue.
- When Outlook asks for the password, do not use the regular AOL password.
- In a browser, sign in to AOL and follow their steps to generate an app password (see AOL’s article "Create and manage 3rd-party app passwords").
- Copy the app password from AOL and paste it into Outlook when prompted for the account password.
- Complete the setup.
If using classic Outlook for Windows instead of new Outlook, the same app password requirement applies: generate the app password on AOL’s site and use it in place of the normal password when Outlook prompts for credentials.
App passwords are one-time passwords that allow Outlook to access the AOL account securely without using the main account password. Many providers, including AOL, require this for IMAP or non‑Microsoft accounts in Outlook.
