I have an android tablet running Microsoft Office 365. In word I try to type a sentence and press enter. The type words that I just input it from the keyboard under the screen disappear every time. I believe I have some sort of a glitch with Microsoft Word that is not compatible with android 14 tablet.

Can you help me?

    Dear @james thompson,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum!

Thank you for your patience while we reviewed this issue in more detail.

At this time, I would like to clarify that Microsoft has not yet published any official KB article or product documentation confirming this behavior as a known issue or as an Android 14 compatibility problem. There is currently no formal Microsoft KB or Learn article that specifically documents text disappearing in Word on Android when pressing the Enter key.

However, the same behavior has been reported by other users on Microsoft Q&A. Also, the Q&A Assist AI provided several suggestions intended to help identify whether the issue is document‑specific or related to the Word mobile editor. May I please confirm whether you have already tried the suggestions provided by the Q&A Assist AI? If not, I recommend giving them a try to see whether they help improve the situation.

Additionally, as a temporary workaround, I would like to suggest the following test:

    • Open any web browser on your device (for example, Edge, Chrome, or another browser)
    • Go to https://www.office.com
    • Sign in and open Word on the Web
    • Create or open a document and check whether the same issue occurs there

If the issue does not occur in Word on the Web, you may use it as a temporary workaround while we wait for further updates.

Please rest assured that this issue does not appear to be related to your subscription or data, and your documents are not being deleted. I truly understand how disruptive this behavior can be, especially when you are trying to work normally, and I appreciate your understanding.

I hope this information can give you some insights in this case.

The behavior where text disappears as typing is typically caused by Overtype mode, not by Android 14 incompatibility.

On Word desktop, this is controlled by the Insert key and the Use overtype mode setting. On mobile, similar behavior can appear if the app is in a mode that replaces existing characters instead of inserting.

    Recommended steps:

    1. Check if the issue is specific to one document
      • Create a brand-new Word document on the tablet.
      • Type a few words, press Enter, then type more text.
      • If the problem only occurs in one file, the document itself may be corrupted; copy the content into a new document.
    2. Update the Word/Office app
      • Open Google Play Store on the tablet.
      • Search for Microsoft Word (or Microsoft 365 app if using the unified app).
      • Install any available updates.
    3. Restart the device and app
      • Fully close Word/Office (remove it from Recent apps).
      • Restart the tablet.
      • Reopen Word and test again.
    4. Reinstall the app (non-destructive, but always ensure files are synced/backed up)
      • Confirm documents are saved to OneDrive, SharePoint, or another cloud location.
      • Uninstall Word (or Microsoft 365 app) from the tablet.
      • Restart the tablet.
      • Reinstall from Google Play Store and sign back in.
    5. If the problem persists across documents and reinstall
      • This is likely a limitation or bug in the mobile Word app rather than Android 14 itself. The mobile versions are more limited than the Windows/macOS versions and do not expose all editing options (such as the full ribbon and some advanced behaviors).
      • Use the in-app feedback option to report the exact behavior so it can be investigated and potentially fixed in an update.

On desktop Word, the equivalent “text disappears as you type” issue is resolved by turning off overtype mode under File > Options > Advanced > Editing options and clearing Use the Insert key to control overtype mode and Use overtype mode.
