Training: Instruction to develop new skills.
To practice for PL-700 and use full Microsoft Fabric features, a Fabric capacity trial is required. A Power BI-only trial isn’t sufficient. Use the supported options below to get a true Fabric trial; which options are available depends on tenant settings and whether a work account is available.
- Start a Fabric trial from the Fabric portal (work account)
- Sign in at the Fabric portal with a work or school account.
- Select the profile icon (top-right) to open Account manager.
- If available, select Start trial or Free trial, accept the terms, choose a Trial capacity region, and select Activate.
- This creates a 60‑day Fabric trial capacity and makes that account the Capacity administrator.
- If Start trial / Free trial is not visible, Fabric or trials are disabled for the tenant; contact the organization’s Fabric administrator.
- Trigger a Fabric trial by using a Fabric feature
- If Fabric and trials are enabled but only a Power BI trial appears, try to create a Fabric item:
- Go to a workspace owned by the account (for example, My workspace) that is not already on Fabric/Premium/Trial capacity.
- Create a Fabric item (for example, a notebook or data pipeline).
- When prompted, accept starting a Fabric trial capacity.
- The workspace is moved to the trial capacity and the account becomes Capacity administrator; additional workspaces can then be assigned to that trial capacity.
- If Fabric and trials are enabled but only a Power BI trial appears, try to create a Fabric item:
- Join an existing Fabric trial in the tenant
- If the tenant has already reached its trial capacity limit, a new trial cannot be started.
- Ask the Fabric or Capacity administrator to:
- Check Admin portal → Capacity settings → Trial for existing trial capacities.
- Either free up unused trials or
- Grant Contributor permissions on an existing trial capacity and/or assign a workspace to that trial for use.
- Start a Fabric trial with a personal email (no work account)
- If no work account is available, a Fabric trial can still be created using a personal email by:
- Creating an Azure account with the personal email via the Azure free account page.
- In the Azure portal, creating a user in Microsoft Entra ID.
- Signing in to the Fabric portal with that Entra user.
- In Fabric, selecting the profile icon → Free trial, choosing a capacity region, and selecting Activate.
- After activation, Fabric items can be created and used for 60 days.
- If no work account is available, a Fabric trial can still be created using a personal email by:
- If a Fabric trial still cannot be activated
- If all methods route only to Power BI trial and no Fabric trial option appears, then Fabric trials are likely disabled or the tenant has exhausted trial capacities.
- In that case, options are:
- Request that the Fabric administrator enable trials or free a trial capacity.
- Request access to an existing Fabric trial capacity.
- As a last step, consider a paid Fabric capacity subscription to continue preparation beyond trial limits.
Once a Fabric trial is active, use the 60 days to build and test notebooks, pipelines, warehouses, and other Fabric items needed for PL‑700 preparation. Note that when the trial ends, non–Power BI Fabric items become inactive unless moved to a paid F or P capacity, but they remain in OneLake for 7 days and can be reactivated by assigning a suitable capacity.
