If you have been able to uninstall the March update, and you are able to access the Recovery Environment using the steps below, if you are also getting a grey screen in Safe Mode, do you have a system restore point available in there to try to revert your system back to.

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.

    1

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

    2

If that process is not successful, go into Command Prompt in the recovery Environment and run these two commands.

    sfc /scannow

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    3

If the above fails, a Windows reset while keeping your files may be the only remaining option.

Follow these steps in order, as the issue started after an update and occurs just before the login screen.

    1. Basic blank‑screen checks
    • Make sure the laptop is plugged in and powered.
    • If an external monitor is connected, disconnect it and any unnecessary peripherals.
    • Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B once to reset the graphics driver. The screen should beep or flicker if this works.
    • Press Windows + P, then tap P once and press Enter to cycle display modes in case Windows is sending output to a non‑existent display.
    1. Force a few failed boots to reach Recovery Environment Since Safe Mode cannot be entered normally, force Windows into Recovery:
    2. Hold the power button for about 10–20 seconds to fully power off when stuck on the grey screen.
    3. Turn the laptop on and let it boot until the grey screen appears, then hold the power button again to force it off.
    4. Repeat this power‑on / force‑off cycle 2–3 times. Windows should then enter Recovery Mode (Windows Recovery Environment).
    5. From Recovery Environment: try Safe Mode Once in Recovery:
    6. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    7. After restart, press F5 to choose Safe Mode with Networking.

If Safe Mode now works and the desktop appears:

    • Open Device Manager → expand Display adapters.
    • Right‑click the graphics adapter → Update driver.
    • If the grey screen started immediately after the update, instead use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.
    • Restart normally and test.
    1. If Safe Mode still cannot be reached: System Restore From the same Advanced options screen in Recovery:
    2. Select System Restore.
    3. Choose a restore point dated before the problematic update.
    4. Let the restore complete and reboot.
    5. If the update caused an unbootable state If the device will not enter Recovery automatically, use Windows installation media from another PC to reach Recovery, then:
    6. Boot from the installation USB.
    7. On the first setup screen, choose language and select Next.
    8. Select Repair your computer.
    9. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore and restore to a point before the update.

If no restore point exists and the problem persists after driver rollback and basic steps, a repair install or reset may be required, but try all Recovery‑based options above first to avoid data loss.
