    Hi JIM MY,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how frustrating this situation can be, especially when you keep seeing messages about too many sign‑in attempts and are still unable to access the account even after changing the password.

I see there is already a Q&A Assist response above, and the main explanation there is generally correct. Repeated sign‑in attempts can trigger a temporary security restriction on Outlook.com/Hotmail accounts, and changing the password alone does not immediately remove that block. May I check whether you have had a chance to review or try the steps suggested in that answer?

To add some additional context, when this type of message appears, it usually means the account has entered a temporary protection state. During this period, continuing to retry sign‑ins or resetting the password multiple times can extend the restriction, which is why the issue may persist even after you have logged out or updated your credentials. In most cases, the system requires a cooling‑off period before normal sign‑in attempts are accepted again.

One more thing to keep in mind is that other devices or mail apps signed in with this account can keep attempting to connect in the background. If possible, it may help to temporarily pause mail sync or remove the account from those apps until access is restored, so the protection window is not unintentionally extended.

If your concern is whether the account is secure, reviewing the Microsoft account recent sign‑in activity after access is restored can help confirm whether the block was triggered by repeated attempts or unusual activity (What is the Recent activity page? - Microsoft Support). You can also refer to the official guidance for unblocking an Outlook.com account, which routes through the Sign-in Helper flow (Unblock my Outlook.com account - Microsoft Support). This is part of automated account protection and cannot be manually bypassed from the forum.

I hope this helps clarify why the sign‑in issue can continue after a password change, and please let me know whether you were able to try the steps already provided so I can share more targeted information if needed.

Too many sign-in attempts can temporarily lock an Outlook.com/Hotmail account for security. When this happens, new passwords or additional attempts often won’t work until the lockout period expires.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Stop trying to sign in for at least 24 hours
      • Repeated attempts can extend the lockout. Wait a full 24 hours (or slightly longer) without trying to log in, reset the password, or submit recovery forms.
    2. After waiting, use the official sign-in helper
      • Go to the Sign-in Helper: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2214157
      • Enter the email address or phone number used for the account and follow the prompts. If a problem is detected, the tool will guide through the fix; if not, it will walk through self-help steps.
    3. If the account might be blocked for unusual activity
      • If messages mention the account is blocked or there was suspicious activity, follow the guidance in Unblock my Outlook.com account from the Hotmail/Outlook.com sign-in article.
    4. If the password is not accepted even after reset
      • Use Recover your account at https://account.live.com/password/reset and follow the steps to verify identity and set a new password.
      • Ensure the correct email domain is used (for example, .com vs .co.uk) and that the email name is typed exactly as registered.
    5. If still locked out after all of the above
      • Wait another 24 hours with no attempts, then retry using the Sign-in Helper and, if needed, the account recovery form from a familiar device and network.

Account recovery and unlock are automated for security; support agents and forum moderators cannot manually bypass these protections.
