Most freezing issues on new Surface devices come from missing updates.

    Steps:

    Settings → Windows Update

    Click Check for updates

Install all updates including optional driver updates

Updates often include Surface firmware and driver fixes that improve stability.

    --

    Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

    camera

    drivers

    system files

    hardware sensors

It can repair common Surface problems in 10–15 minutes.

    --

Open Command Prompt as Admin and copy-paste:

    sfc /scannow

    --

Look at the Event Viewer application error logs immediately after freezing. This will give you the possible clues.

    Open Task Manager

    Go to Startup

    Disable unnecessary apps

    Hi Diane Cappadona,

I understand how disappointing it can be to experience freezing on a brand‑new Surface Laptop 7.

To start, please make sure your device is fully up to date by checking Settings > Windows Update and installing any available updates, including optional ones. These often include important firmware and reliability improvements for Surface devices.

If the issue continues, I recommend opening the Surface app and running the built‑in diagnostics. This can help identify common driver, firmware, or hardware‑related issues that may not be immediately visible.

It would also be helpful to temporarily disconnect any external devices, such as docks, USB accessories, or external monitors and check whether the freezing still occurs, as connected accessories can sometimes contribute to this behavior.

If the freezing persists, one optional step you can try is running the built‑in Windows system file checks (SFC and DISM). This can help rule out any system file issues.

    1. Click Start, type Command Prompt
    2. Right‑click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator, then select Yes
    3. In the window that opens, type the following and press Enter:
         DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    4. When that finishes, type the next command and press Enter:
         sfc /scannow

    5. Restart your device once both steps are complete

When you have a moment, kindly share with me when the freezing usually happens, for example, after waking from sleep, while using specific apps or when accessories are connected. It can help us narrow this down more quickly.

Please feel free to reach out with any additional details. I'm here to help and happy to continue working through this with you.
