Account closure

I have been trying to cancel my Outlook subscription as we closed our small business in October 2025. I noticed that Microsoft charged my visa on 2/27/26 for another year of service. I think I finally stopped the automatic charge for next year, but I want them to reverse the charges since we are no longer in business and we won’t be using outlook anymore. I have asked for a credit through the chat section of support, but I really want to talk to a real person. Has anybody else had problems asking for a refund? Who can I talk to?

    Hi @Info,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the billing concern with your subscription.

Based on the information provided, since this appears to be a business account, the most appropriate next step is to contact the Microsoft Billing team by opening a support ticket. They are best positioned to review the details of the charge and confirm whether cancellation or refund options may be available, in accordance with Microsoft’s billing policy and the timing of the renewal.

For guidance on how to submit a billing support request, please refer to: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn.

When submitting the ticket, it may be helpful to clearly note that your request relates to cancellation and a refund following a recent renewal, so it can be routed to the appropriate billing team. As an example, you may consider a ticket title such as: “Billing Support Request: Subscription Refund.”

Please note that if you do not have the required admin permissions, a Global or Billing Administrator may need to submit the support request on your behalf.

As moderators, our primary goal is to provide helpful guidance and support through general troubleshooting steps. While we do not have access to internal billing systems or the administrative tools required to review or modify account‑specific details, we truly appreciate your understanding of these limitations. We genuinely hope the information we share helps point you in the right direction, and we're always here to assist as much as we can within our scope.

I hope this information is useful. Thank you for taking the time to raise this question. If you need any further clarification or assistance, please feel free to leave a comment under this post.

To stop future charges and request a refund, two things are needed: cancel/turn off recurring billing correctly, then contact Microsoft Support directly for billing help.

    1. Verify the subscription is cancelled
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy the Outlook/Microsoft 365 subscription.
      2. Find the Outlook/Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
      3. If it shows Turn on recurring billing, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and will not renew again; nothing more is needed to stop future charges.
      4. If it still shows Cancel or Turn off recurring billing, follow the prompts to cancel. Note that cancellations must be more than 2 days before the billing date to avoid the next charge.
    2. Check who billed the subscription
      • If the subscription was purchased through a third party (Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon, Best Buy, etc.), the refund must be requested from that retailer, not Microsoft.
      • If it was purchased directly from Microsoft, continue with the steps below.
    3. Request a refund from Microsoft
      1. First cancel the subscription as above; refund eligibility is checked after cancellation.
      2. Then use the self-help/refund flow for Microsoft 365 described in How to get a refund on a Microsoft subscription. This guides through whether the recent charge is refundable based on region and policy.
      3. If the charge is not recognized or looks like a duplicate, investigate it on the Manage your payments page from the Microsoft account dashboard as described in How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft.
    4. Talk to a real person
      • For account- and billing-related issues (like disputing the 2/27/26 renewal), contact Microsoft Support directly rather than the community forums:
        • Go to Contact Microsoft Support from the refund article and choose the product and Billing and payments as the issue type.
        • Use the Chat with a support agent in your web browser or Call me back options to reach a live agent, as described in the Q&A guidance.
    5. If cancellation options are missing
      • If there is no Cancel or Turn off recurring billing option:
        • Confirm the correct Microsoft account is being used.
        • Make sure there is no overdue balance; overdue amounts must be paid before cancellation.
        • If still stuck, use the guided support link in the cancellation article to be routed to support.

Because this involves specific billing history and a recent renewal, only Microsoft Support (or the original retailer, if applicable) can actually reverse the charge; community users cannot access or adjust the account.
