    Hi Zaki Khan,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how concerning it can be when you’re unable to encrypt an attached file in Outlook for Windows (classic), especially when you need to send sensitive information.

I see there is already a Q&A Assist answer above, and the overall explanation is generally aligned with Microsoft’s documented encryption options. Have you had a chance to try the guidance in that response?

To add a bit more clarification: Microsoft’s built-in encryption options for Microsoft 365 Personal/Family (such as “Encrypt” and “Do Not Forward”) are described as available for Outlook.com accounts with a qualifying subscription. For reference, please see: Send encrypted messages with a Microsoft 365 personal or family subscription - Microsoft Support

If you specifically need certificate-based encryption while sending from that Yahoo address, Outlook also supports S/MIME, but this is a more advanced setup that requires a digital ID (certificate) and relies on recipients having the appropriate keys/certificates to open the protected message. If you want to review how that works, see Set up Outlook to use S/MIME encryption - Microsoft Support and Send S/MIME or Microsoft Purview encrypted emails in Outlook - Microsoft Support

Since this is a user-to-user forum, contributors can help explain supported options but cannot provide phone support. Additionally, please avoid posting personal contact details (such as phone numbers) in public threads for privacy and safety. If you need direct assistance, you can contact Microsoft Support via live chat using the steps below.

    1. Visit the Microsoft Support contact page: Contact - Microsoft Support
    2. In the search bar provided on the page, type "Outlook issue" and press Enter.
    3. Click on the "Get Help" button that appears.
    4. Scroll down the page until you see and click on the "Contact Support" option.
    5. When prompted to select your product or service, choose "Other Products".
    6. For the category, choose "Outlook".
    7. Look for and click on "Chat with a support agent in your web browser".
    8. Confirm your personal email when prompted - this is the email Microsoft will use to communicate with you during and after the support session.
    9. Explain your situation clearly: Be concise but provide all the relevant details.

I hope this helps clarify why this behavior can occur and points you to the most appropriate next step for direct assistance.

Phone support cannot be provided here, but step-by-step guidance can be used to resolve the issue.

In this scenario Outlook is being used as a client for a Yahoo account. Outlook’s built‑in message/file encryption features depend on either:

    1. A qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription and Microsoft 365/Outlook.com mailbox for Microsoft Purview Message Encryption, or
    2. S/MIME certificates (public/private keys) configured for the account.

When a non‑Microsoft mailbox such as Yahoo is configured in Outlook, the Microsoft 365 “Encrypt” / “Do Not Forward” options do not apply to that external provider’s transport. To encrypt content end‑to‑end, S/MIME must be set up and the recipient’s public key must be available.

    Key points and actions:

    1. Verify encryption eligibility
      • Encryption in Outlook that keeps messages and attachments encrypted within Microsoft 365 requires a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription and an Outlook.com/Microsoft 365 mailbox, not a Yahoo mailbox.
      • If only a Yahoo account is used in Outlook, the Microsoft 365 “Encrypt” options will not function as described for Microsoft 365 mailboxes.
    2. Understand how Outlook encryption works
      • Outlook can encrypt messages using S/MIME or Microsoft Purview Message Encryption. Any message protected with IRM (for example, Do not forward) is automatically encrypted.
      • To use these features, the account must support them and be properly configured.
    3. Using S/MIME (if end‑to‑end encryption is required)
      • Obtain an S/MIME certificate for the Yahoo email address from a certificate authority.
      • Install and trust the certificate on the device, then configure it in Outlook’s account security settings (steps differ by platform; for Mac, for example, the certificate is imported to Keychain Access and then configured in Outlook under Accounts → Security).
      • To encrypt to a recipient, Outlook must have that recipient’s public key. For external recipients, this is typically obtained by exchanging signed emails first; once the signed mail is received and the certificate installed, encrypted mail can be sent.
      • If encryption fails, it is usually because the recipient’s public key is missing.
    4. Alternative within Microsoft 365 ecosystem
      • If a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription and an Outlook.com or Microsoft 365 mailbox are available, configure that mailbox in Outlook and send from it instead of Yahoo.
      • In a new message from the Microsoft 365/Outlook.com account, go to the Options ribbon → Encrypt, then choose Encrypt or Do Not Forward. Attach the file and send; the message and supported attachments remain encrypted within Microsoft 365.

If direct assistance from a support agent is required (for example, to review account type and subscription), use the in‑product Help in Outlook.com or the general Microsoft support entry points referenced below to reach chat or phone support.
