The Microsoft 365 Personal Classic subscription shown is already active and does not require a product key. Classic plans are tied to a Microsoft account, not to a key.
To restore access to the apps:
- Confirm the correct subscription and account
- Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to purchase Microsoft 365 Personal Classic.
- Verify that the subscription listed there matches “Microsoft 365 Personal Classic” and that the renewal/expiry date is correct and in the future.
- If a different plan such as Microsoft 365 Basic is shown, note that Basic does not include desktop apps and only provides OneDrive storage and web apps.
- Activate Office using the Microsoft account (not a key)
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office app on the computer.
- If prompted to activate or sign in, choose Sign in (not “Enter a product key”).
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account confirmed in step 1.
- Ensure no other account (work/school or a different personal account) is signed in inside the Office app that might not have a license.
- If prompted for a product key
- Ignore the product key prompt and instead use the Microsoft account as described above. For Microsoft 365 Personal, the account is the license.
- Product keys are only needed in special cases (for example, Workplace Discount Program or volume license), which do not apply to standard Personal subscriptions.
- If Office still shows subscription or activation errors
- Check for banners such as “SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED”, “Unlicensed Product”, or “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We’ve run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription…”.
- If the banner indicates a payment or subscription problem, follow the guidance in the error message and verify payment details on the Services & subscriptions page.
- If the subscription status online looks correct but the apps still show notices, follow the steps in A subscription notice appears when I open a Microsoft 365 application to troubleshoot activation and subscription notices.
- If the subscription was purchased via a retail card or email
- If a physical card or email with a product key was used originally and that key has never been redeemed, it must be entered at https://www.microsoft365.com/setup or via the link in the email receipt before the subscription starts.
- If the subscription already appears as active under Services & subscriptions, no further key entry is required.
If, after confirming that the subscription is active under the correct Microsoft account and signing in with that account in the Office apps, access is still blocked, contact Microsoft Support for account-specific investigation.
