Follow these steps that address recent Gmail/Outlook issues in classic Outlook for Windows:
- Update Outlook to a fixed build
Recent Gmail sign-in issues in classic Outlook have been fixed in newer builds. Update Outlook:
- Open Outlook.
- Select File > Office Account.
- Select Update Options > Update Now.
- After the update completes, restart Outlook and try adding the Gmail account again.
- If you see errors like “browser or app may not be secure” or IMAP setup errors
These are known issues that have been fixed by an Outlook update which changes sign-in to use another browser window. Ensure Outlook is at or above these builds:
- Beta Channel / Current Channel / Current Channel Preview: Version 2404 (Build 17531.10000)
- Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2407 (Build 17727.10000)
If Outlook is older, update as in step 1. If you previously switched to an Insider channel as a workaround, you can now switch back to Current Channel using the same registry-based method described in the article (InsidersLabBehavior registry key and Insider deployment registry command), then update again via File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Verify IMAP is enabled in Gmail
If Outlook reports that it can’t set up the Google account with IMAP or that Gmail settings need to be changed, check IMAP in Gmail:
- In a browser, go to Gmail.com.
- Select Settings (gear icon) > See all settings.
- Open the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP.
- Select Save Changes.
- Confirm server settings if adding the account manually
If using manual setup in Outlook, use these Gmail settings:
- Incoming (IMAP) server:
imap.gmail.com, SSL: Yes, Port: 993
- Outgoing (SMTP) server:
smtp.gmail.com
- Requires SSL: Yes
- Requires TLS: Yes (if available)
- Requires authentication: Yes
- Port for SSL: 465
- Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587
- Account name/username: full Gmail address
- Password: Gmail password (or app password if using that method)
- If the issue started suddenly and persists after updating
Because Google has been changing authentication and Outlook has shipped fixes, a sudden failure usually indicates either:
- Outlook is on an older build that still has the Gmail sign-in issue, or
- IMAP was disabled or changed in Gmail settings.
After updating Outlook and confirming IMAP is enabled, remove the failing Gmail profile from Outlook and add it again using File > Account Settings > Account Settings > New.
