Use the updated Gmail sign-in flow for classic Outlook and, if needed, apply the documented workaround to reset the Google/Outlook connection.
- Confirm Outlook build has the Gmail fix
- In Outlook, select File > Office Account > About Outlook.
- Ensure it is on a build that includes the Gmail sign-in fix (for example, Current Channel Version 2404 Build 17531.10000 or later for the sign-in issue, and Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later for the Retry behavior).
- If not, select Update Options > Update Now, then restart Outlook.
- Try adding Gmail again using the browser sign-in
- In Outlook classic, go to File > Add Account.
- Enter the Gmail address and proceed.
- When the browser window opens for Google sign-in, sign in to Gmail.
- On the consent screen, under Select what Microsoft apps & services can access, ensure the box is checked for:
- “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.”
- Complete the sign-in. This should restore the connection without needing the Google App Password.
- If the sign-in window does not appear or still fails, use the manual workaround Step 1: Remove Microsoft apps & services access in Google
- Close Outlook.
- Sign in to the Google account at google.com.
- Select the profile picture > Manage your Google Account.
- In the left menu, select Security.
- Scroll to Your connections to third-party apps & services and select Microsoft apps & services.
- Under Microsoft apps & services has some access to your Google Account, select See Details.
- Under Access you've given to Microsoft apps & services, select Remove all access.
- Confirm.
- Open Credential Manager from the Windows Start menu (on some systems via Control Panel > Credential Manager).
- Select Windows Credentials.
- Under Generic Credentials, find entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
- Expand each and hover over the name until the full value including tp_google_imap_Oauth2 is visible; these belong to the Gmail account.
- Remove each credential that includes MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 (there are typically two per Gmail account).
- If only the affected Gmail account should be removed, map credentials to identities under the registry key:
-
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities
-
- Re-add or re-sign-in to Gmail in Outlook
- Start Outlook.
- If the Gmail account is still present but not syncing, use the Sign in via browser banner in Outlook and repeat the Google sign-in, ensuring the Gmail permission checkbox is selected.
- If the Gmail account was removed, go to File > Add Account, add the Gmail address again, and complete the browser sign-in with the required permission checked.
- If the error mentions IMAP settings
- The message “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP. You may need to make changes to your Gmail settings.” can also occur if IMAP is disabled in Gmail for some users.
- Follow Google’s guidance in Add Gmail to another email client to verify IMAP is enabled if that control is still present in the Gmail account.
These steps reset the trust between Gmail and Outlook classic and force Outlook to use the fixed browser-based OAuth sign-in instead of older, blocked methods. The Google App Password is not required when using this modern OAuth flow.
