Issue "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead"

I am unable to send or receive messages via Outlook on my personal computer and when I try to verify my credentials on-line, I receive a message that "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead." I tried logging in via outlook.live and but even when I log in, my profile email there is a bunch of letters "@outlook.com" (not my actual email address even though my name of the account is correctly displayed). Please help!

Are you using third party email address as your Microsoft account alias/username? Such as gmail.com, or others?

The behavior matches two known Outlook.com issues:

    1. The sign-in error for personal accounts in Outlook for Windows.
    2. The mailbox showing as an "outlook_[long series of letters and numbers]@outlook.com" address.

    Address both in this order:

    1. Fix the "You can't sign in here with a personal account" error in Outlook for Windows
    • This is a known bug in Outlook for Microsoft 365 that is fixed in Version 2303 Build 16227.20202 and higher.
    • First, update Office to get the fixed build (File → Office Account → Update Options → Update Now). Once on a build that includes the fix, restart Outlook and sign in again with the Outlook.com account.

If updating is not yet possible, use the documented workaround:

    • Turn off Outlook Support Diagnostics, which disables the in-app "Contact Support" feature that is triggering the bad authentication.
    • Set this registry value under the Windows user that runs Outlook:
      • Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General
      • Value name: DisableSupportDiagnostics
      • Value type: REG_DWORD
      • Value data: 1 (hex 00000001)
    • After setting the value, restart Outlook and try signing in again.
    • When Outlook is updated to a fixed build, remove this registry value so Contact Support works again.
    1. Fix the strange "outlook_[letters-and-numbers]@outlook.com" address This indicates the Microsoft account is using a non-Outlook.com primary alias or a temporary/alias address, which causes Outlook.com to expose the internal outlook_[GUID]@outlook.com address and can break sending/receiving.

    Use one of these workarounds:

Option A – Manually configure the account as IMAP/POP in Outlook

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Press Windows Key + R, type outlook /profiles and select OK.
    3. In "Choose Profile", select OptionsNew, give the profile a new name.
    4. Choose Advanced optionsLet me set up my account manually.
    5. Select IMAP or POP and enter the server settings from the email provider or from the POP/IMAP reference in the article.
    6. Finish setup, then in "Choose Profile" set this new profile as default and open Outlook.

Option B – Switch the primary alias to an Outlook.com/Hotmail.com address

    1. Go to the Microsoft account alias management page (as described in the article) and sign in.
    2. Set an Outlook.com or Hotmail.com address as the primary alias.
      • If there is no such alias, create one using Add email and a new aliasCreate a new email address and add it as an alias.
    3. In Outlook for Windows, remove the Outlook.com account from the profile and add it again using the normal automatic setup.

After doing this, the mailbox should:

    • Show the correct Outlook.com address instead of the outlook_[letters-and-numbers] address.
    • Send and receive normally.

If problems persist after these steps, use the "Still need help?" options in the Outlook.com article to contact support, especially if the account or aliases may have been changed or removed.
