I have used 2 different phone numbers and it won't let it go through. I keep seeing this error after I put in my phone number and hit "send code":

We can't continue with the signup process right now due to an internal server error. Please try again later.

    Hi @Danielle Onyekwere

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

Regarding the Developer Program signup error (50001): This error commonly occurs during the phone verification step of the Microsoft 365 Developer Program registration. In many cases, it happens when the phone number has already been associated with another Developer Program account or has reached the allowed verification limit. One possible workaround is to remove the existing Developer Program profile associated with that phone number or attempt the signup process using a completely different phone number.

You may refer to the official Microsoft 365 Developer Program FAQ for additional details on verification requirements.

If using a new phone number still results in the same error, the appropriate next step would be to contact Microsoft Developer Support. Support requests related to the Developer Program are typically handled through the Services Hub. Please note that access to the Services Hub depends on your organization’s support agreement and may require a paid support plan. You can review the requirements and sign-in conditions in the Services Hub sign-in FAQs before submitting a request.

As I am only forum moderator, I do not have access to internal Microsoft system to check this for you. All of the published threads related to this issue only pointed for contacting support.

I hope this information helps clarify the situation.

The error message and code indicate a backend issue during the phone verification step, not a problem with the specific phone numbers. The sign-up flow for the Microsoft 365 Developer Program relies on Microsoft’s identity and verification services, so when an internal server error occurs, the only supported actions are to retry later and ensure all prerequisites are met.

    Use these steps:

    1. Confirm supported sign-in account
      • Make sure the account used to join the Microsoft 365 Developer Program is supported:
        • Use a Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra–enabled email.
        • Do not use a *.onmicrosoft.com address or a phone-number-only sign-in, as these are not supported for joining the program.
      • Sign in from the Join the Microsoft 365 Developer Program page, then try the flow again.
    2. Wait and retry the sign-up
      • Because the error is an internal server error (Code 50001), wait and retry after some time. Temporary service issues can cause this during the phone verification step.
    3. Check phone verification basics
      • Ensure the phone number meets the general verification requirements used across Microsoft services:
        • Use a mobile phone number, not a VoIP number.
        • Ensure the phone can receive SMS or calls from the regions Microsoft uses for verification.
        • Avoid repeated, rapid attempts, which can trigger temporary protection blocks on verification codes.
    4. If the issue persists, contact support
      • If repeated attempts over time still fail with the same internal server error, capture the MS-CorrelationId and error code and contact Microsoft support so they can investigate the backend issue.
