Unsaved work in most apps and private/incognito browser sessions cannot be recovered after a restart. Incognito tabs in Chrome and unsaved content in applications are designed not to persist once the session ends, including after an update reboot.
To reduce data loss in the future, use the built‑in recovery and update controls in Windows and in each app:
- Configure Windows Update so restarts happen at convenient times
- Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Use Schedule the restart when an update requires a reboot and choose a time when active work is not in progress.
- Set active hours so automatic restarts for updates only happen when the device is not in use. See Keep your PC up to date with active hours from the Windows Update FAQ.
- Use Windows recovery options if the system becomes unstable after an update
- If there are problems installing or applying an update, use Reinstall Windows using Windows Update from Recovery options in Windows.
- If the PC is not working well after recent changes, use System Restore or Reset as described in the recovery options table.
- Improve data resilience in applications
- Enable auto‑save or recovery features in each application where available.
- Avoid relying on incognito/private browser windows for important work, because they are not meant to be restored after a restart.
These steps will not bring back the lost session, but they will help ensure that future Windows Update restarts occur only at chosen times and that work is saved or recoverable through app‑specific mechanisms.
