On/off switch for a surface Pro 9

I purchased a Microsoft surface pro from Costco on 4/14/2023. In May 2025 my on/off switch stopped working. In July of 2025, I took the Pro to a Microsoft certified repair shop. I was told that it could not be fixed, as Microsoft does not make the part. I have previously tried to reboot and other corrective measures. I am perflexed as to why a $1200 computer life expectancy is only 2 years. I did not purchase extended warranty. The certified repair person was able to turn on the computer, but said it would not last.

Any other suggestions.

Even if the warranty has expired...

Get service for your out of warranty or damaged Surface

Go to Microsoft Surface Service page

Sign in with your Microsoft account

Register the device using the serial number

Select Service → Device won’t power on

    Or contact support directly.

For a Surface Pro 9 power button that has stopped working and cannot be repaired by a local shop, the remaining options are through Microsoft service and support.

Since basic troubleshooting and a certified repair attempt have already been done, the next step is to use Microsoft’s official service channels:

    1. Check warranty and start a service order
Go to the Microsoft warranty and devices page to:
    2. Send the device to Microsoft
      Microsoft offers mail-in service where:
      • The device is inspected and serviced by Microsoft technicians using certified parts.
      • If in warranty (or covered by a protection plan), service may be at reduced or no cost depending on coverage.
      • If out of warranty, out-of-warranty service is still available for a fee. Service is typically available for at least 3 years after sale for Surface tablets and laptops.
    3. Consider in-person authorized service
If available in the region, an in-person Microsoft service center or Authorized Service Provider can:
      • Perform professional hardware inspection and troubleshooting.
      • Advise whether the device can be repaired or must be replaced.
        See: Find in-person support.
    4. Self-repair (only if technically experienced)
For those with technician-level skills and tools, Microsoft provides:

If none of the above options are viable or cost-effective, replacement of the device may be the only practical path, but Microsoft service (mail-in or in-person) is the only supported route when a certified shop cannot obtain or replace the power button assembly.
