In Outlook on the web/Outlook.com, messages that “disappear” from the Other tab or Junk Email are usually being moved automatically by Focused Inbox or by junk filtering.
Use these checks and adjustments:
- Check the Junk Email folder
- Open Mail.
- In the folder list, select Junk Email (choose More if it is hidden).
- If expected messages are there, right‑click a message and select Move to Inbox so similar messages are treated as normal mail in the future.
- Check the Other tab behavior
- Focused Inbox separates mail into Focused and Other. Some messages may be automatically moved between these tabs.
- When a message appears briefly in Other and then moves, it is likely being reclassified.
- To correct this, when a message is in the wrong tab:
- Right‑click it on the Focused or Other tab.
- Choose Move > Move to Focused inbox or Move to Other inbox.
- Use Always move to Focused inbox or Always move to Other inbox so future messages from that sender stay where expected.
- Verify Focused Inbox settings
- In Outlook on the web/Outlook.com, go to Settings > Mail > Layout.
- In Focused Inbox, choose whether to Sort messages into Focused and Other or Don’t sort my messages.
- If the automatic movement is confusing, temporarily select Don’t sort my messages so all mail appears in a single list.
- Browser troubleshooting (Chrome)
- If messages visually “flash” and vanish but are still in the mailbox, it can be a browser rendering or cache issue.
- Try an InPrivate/Incognito window in Chrome.
- If that works, clear cache/cookies in the normal profile or disable extensions that might interfere with Outlook on the web.
After adjusting Focused Inbox training (step 2) and confirming the Junk Email folder (step 1), messages should stop unexpectedly disappearing from Other and Junk.
